Michigan City came back to score right after half-time which ignited the passionate student section. It was a very close game with both teams putting forth maximum effort. Long-time fans sat on the edge of their seat for the fierce competition. Michigan City fan, Richard Gore, had season tickets to both the girls and the boys basketball teams. “This rivalry has been going on for years,” said Gore. “At least thirty years. It’s an exciting game and I’m still a die-hard fan.”

In the end, the Wolves fell to the Slicers 48 to 42. G.G. McMillon has worked at Michigan City High School for seven years and has made it to nearly every single home game. Reflecting on the Wolves’ loss she said, “They did good. Two teams can’t win because someone has to lose! But they did good.”

The boys' varsity game was another intense show-down. The student sections roared when their team made a successful play and protested at some of the calls made by referees. The first quarter ended with Michigan City in the lead, a trend that continued into half-time despite a valiant effort made by the Slicers. Both teams took time to re-group as half-time show began. It started off with a free-throw shooting contest in which one lucky fan won a gift certificate to the local Buffalo Wild Wings franchise. The Michigan City dance team, the Wolvettes, also gave a lively performance with a choreographed accompanying a medley of different songs.

La Porte began to make some strides on the scoreboard in the third quarter but it wasn’t enough to keep the Wolves at bay. The game ended with the hometown Michigan City at 63 points and the La Porte Slicers at 42. Michael Varda, a La Porte fan, works hard to follow both the girls and boys teams. “Both teams tonight worked tremendously hard,” he said. Referring to the Slicers he said, “Their work ethic is second to none.”

In the end, each school went home with one loss and one win. The fans went home knowing that their teams gave it their all and another longstanding high-school basketball rivalry was revived.
