#1StudentNWI: Talent Show, Winterball, and Spirit Week at Michigan City High School

What Happened at Michigan City High School:

Art
The halls at MCHS have gotten a lot more colorful! Mrs. Erheart’s Digital Design classes have been painting murals on the walls. The students say their class felt the walls were bare and needed more added to them. The murals began with simple MC logos to promote school spirit but also include a cute message about creativity (“The more you use, the more you have.”) and a piece featuring Shakespeare. This semester, students are also adding paintings to the cafeteria commons area, which focus on human faces and body forms. The overall school looks exciting and fun thanks to the creativity of our art students!

City’s Got Talent Auditions
Each year, the student council sponsors a talent show entitled “City’s Got Talent.” City’s Got Talent gives the students at MCHS a chance to showcase their abilities and interests to the school and the community. Students signed up during lunch hours to audition. Once the list was compiled, students were assigned audition times and performed in the auditorium after school for the talent show board. The board then decided which acts will be included in the show. City’s Got Talent will be held in March to give all the contestants time to prepare and practice their acts for the show.

Winterball
MCHS publications Alpha Yearbook and Cityzen Newspaper sponsored the Winterball on January 30. The dance was held at the Uptown Center in Michigan City. Girls put on their make up, dresses, and heels, and guys suited up in shirts and ties to come out and have a fun time on the dance floor with friends. Among the dancing, attendees could get their picture taken by Robb Quinn Imaging. Students could even enjoy a table full of sweets which featured chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate covered raisins, cherries, cupcakes, cake pops, and licorice. There were also several giveaways for the students including gift certificates to tanning salons, movie theaters, restaurants, clothing stores, and photography studios. Boxes of Fannie May candy, a free Alpha Yearbook, and a Starbucks gift bag were also given away. Winterball gave all the students an opportunity to have a fun time with their friends.

City Welcomes New Football Coach
Phil Mason was named the new football coach for the 2016-2017 football season. He also recently started teaching at the high school and is teaching Special Education. Coach Mason has been teaching for 22 years and came to City from Andrean High School in Merrillville. He was the football coach at Andrean but is excited to be apart of the Wolf Pack and City’s athletic department and staff. Welcome to MCHS, Coach Mason!

Coming up…

Spirit Week
Spirit Week and Winterfest is sponsored by the student council. This year’s Winterfest will be held the week of February 16 through February 19. Fun themes are planned for the week including Disney Day, Decades Day, Patriotic Day, and Class Colors. Class olympics will also be held on the soccer field on Tuesday night with games like the frozen t shirt challenge and powderpuff football. A pep session will take place Friday in the gym. At the pep session, the winter sports will be recognized, too. Spirit week and Winterfest give the students of MCHS an opportunity to show their school spirit and be proud to be part of the Wolf Pack!

Sectionals
City’s winter athletes are preparing for the sectional games and competitions later this month. Boys basketball begins their sectional March 1, and boys swimming sectionals take place on February 18 for the preliminaries and February 20 for the finals. Gymnastics will compete in their sectional on March 5. Good luck to all of our athletes competing in sectionals and heading to the post season!
