As summer winds down and students prepare to head back to school, many are heading into their senior year. After a hot summer filled with beach days, social events, and summer jobs, many are ready to dive into their final year at their high school.
Molly Caplice, a La Lumiere student and #1StudentNWI writer, is one such senior, eager to head into a year that promises to be busy, fulfilling, and of course, bittersweet.
“I’m interested in a lot of things and that’s why I love La Lumiere,” Caplice said. “I have the opportunity to be involved in so many things. It’s going to be cool to see how my class leaves a legacy at La Lumiere and affects the future.”
Caplice grew up in Michigan City with her four older siblings, enjoying her time at the beach and witnessing the growth of downtown. With plenty of restaurants, salons, and shops popping up, her family joined the ranks as her mom opened Darling Boutique in 2012. Now, Caplice enjoys helping out around the boutique and helping with their photography and social media.
“In the past 10 years the downtown area in Michigan City has grown,” Caplice said. “It’s really cool that as I grew up I got to see the whole town grow.”
As the town grew, Caplice found herself entering into La Lumiere, a school that she says is integral to who she has become. Full of opportunity, activities, and diversity, the school has given Caplice and her fellow students plenty of chances to discover what they are truly interested in and where they belong.
“It’s a great community, that’s the best way to explain it,” Caplice said. “There’s so much going on and I think there's just no place like it. It’s unique and it helps shape you into a great, personable person. You are forced out of your comfort zone.”
Now, Caplice is heavily involved in her school and participates on the soccer and basketball teams, drama productions, the academic decathlon team. Adding to her responsibilities this year, she’ll serve as the Humanities Prefect, which means she’ll be in charge of fine arts, the yearbook, and school dances at La Lumiere. As the youngest of five, she’s no stranger to a busy, hectic schedule and plenty of action going on around her. That, on top of her previous involvement at La Lumiere leads her to believe this year will be challenging, but worth every moment.
“This past year I was really busy so this year I’m somewhat prepared,” Caplice said. “I’m just really excited to see myself and my class step into a leadership role as seniors.”
The future is something Caplice is looking forward to, even if she’ll miss La Lumiere and the many opportunities she has as a senior. After high school she plans to attend college and major in either pre-law or political science, possibly following that up with law school.
“Ideally, I’d like to go into human rights and just try to make people be treated equally and fairly,” Caplice said.
