Fleming is a four-year employee of the hospital, having spent the last three in the surgical area. He applied for the scholarship when he decided to return to Ivy Tech Community College in Valparaiso for its surgical technician program. Fleming plans to complete the course next summer and work as a technician, hopefully at Franciscan St. Anthony Health. “I am very appreciative of the help that this scholarship will provide as I return to school.

It would have been very difficult to attain my goal without this help,” he said. The $5,000 award was established in 2009 in honor of Petti, one of Franciscan St. Anthony-Health’s most highly regarded nursing professionals, who died from cancer at age 53 in August 2008. The scholarship is paid directly to the recipient’s school to help defray the cost of tuition.
