Community Healthcare System Names John Doherty VP Therapy Service, Sports Medicine, Occupational Health

DOHERTY-JOHNThe Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana (CFNI), has announced the promotion of John Doherty, MS, PT, ATC. Doherty has accepted the position of Vice President – Therapy Services, Sports Medicine and Occupational Health.

CFNI is the parent company to various healthcare entities, including Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. In his role as Vice President of Therapy Services, Sports Medicine and Occupational Health, Doherty is responsible for overseeing Therapy Services (physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy), Audiology, Concussion Clinic, Athletic Training and Occupational Health for the healthcare system.

“With his experience and background in sports medicine, high school and college athletic training programs and the Concussion Clinics, John has valuable insight into the growing needs of both the youth and adults of the community” said Donald P. Fesko, President and Chief Executive Officer, Community Foundation of Northwest Indiana, Inc. “His expertise and knowledge will help us further enhance the patient experience in Therapy Services.”

Doherty began his career with the healthcare system in May, 2011 as coordinator/director of Community Hospital’s Concussion Clinic. In October, 2015 he was named regional director of Outpatient Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine, expanding his role with many of the outpatient therapy programs throughout Community Healthcare System.

Doherty is a member of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency’s Athletic Trainer Board and the Indiana Department of Education’s Concussion and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Advisory Boards. He also is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. In 2013, he was awarded the Joe Harvey Distinguished Service Award by the Indiana Athletic Trainers’ Association and in 2014, was their Hall-of-Fame Inductee. He also was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in May of 2015.

Since 1985 he has written his weekly sports medicine column for The Times newspaper.
