St. Catherine Hospital Honors Arredondo During Nurses Week 2018

St. Catherine Hospital celebrated their healthcare professionals’ talents of leadership, skill and compassionate care during National Nurses Week through a series of special events. Sixteen nurses received recognition at the Nursing Excellence Awards Tea. Amanda Arredondo, RN, was selected from that group to receive the 2018 Nursing/Caregiver Excellence Award.

“Nursing is a respected, highly-rated profession,” said Paula Swenson, vice president Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer. “As medical technology has expanded, so too have the roles of nurses over the years. Our nurses do amazing things each and every day. It’s important to recognize them for their outstanding contributions to provide extraordinary care to our patients.”

Arredondo, a critical care nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for six years, began her healthcare career as a nurse fellow at St. Catherine Hospital. Described as friendly, kind, energetic and trustworthy, Arredondo has excelled in her willingness to learn and grow in her career.

“She takes charge of the unit when necessary and is always willing to help her co-workers,” said ICU charge nurse Janee Babbit.

“Amanda is a wonderful patient advocate who provides emotional support to patient families and their loved ones,” Swenson said. “She exemplifies all of the qualities an ICU nurse should have.”

Other nursing excellence honorees are: Katie Cruz, 6 West; Sharon Gutierrez, Stephanie Daniels, Vera Moore, Natasha Hudak, Lisa Luna, all 5 West; Jennifer Rarick, Intensive Care Unit; Madeleine Lim, Intermediate Care; Rebecca Kraus, Endoscopy; Adrienne Walker, Post Anesthesia Care; Stephanie Hamilton and Nina Stur, Case Management; Juanita Woodfaulk and Mayra Manriquez, Acute Rehabilitation and Shannon Lowden, Nursing Administration.

The Nursing Excellence Awards Tea is an important event for the entire hospital and the nursing team, explained Swenson.

St. Catherine Hospital is one of less than 2 percent of more than 2,500 hospitals in the nation to repeatedly receive five-star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for delivering safe, quality care to patients, she said.

“Impressive national rankings like that cannot happen without an outstanding team of nurses,” Swenson said. “Nursing is a tough job, an important job – and I’m proud of how our nurses make a difference in the lives of many.”

A basket raffle also was held during the week to help support the hospital’s mission to care for the disadvantaged and underserved. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the daughters of the late-Nicole Marie Lopez, who was an employee with St. Catherine Hospital’s Hospitality & Nutrition Services.
