MCAS Celebrates School Breakfast Week March 4-8

Studies indicate that students who eat school breakfast increase math and reading test scores and improve their cognitive speed and memory, according to the Food Research and Action Center. However, fewer than half of children who receive lunch at school also receive breakfast.

To increase participation in the School Breakfast Program and to boost student success during ISTEP+ testing, Michigan City Area Schools will celebrate National School Breakfast Week, March 4-8.

The 2013 theme, “Be a Star with School Breakfast,” emphasizes how eating a balanced breakfast at school can help students shine. Breakfast is free to all MCAS elementary students every day during the school year. In addition, Barker, Elston, and Krueger Middle School students will receive free breakfast March 5-7, the days ISTEP+ tests will be given at their buildings.

Our healthy school breakfasts offer students the nutrition they need to get set for a busy day,” said Kathleen Kane, MCAS Director of Food Service Operations.

School breakfast can be a lifesaver for busy parents, too. “It’s a race for many families to get their kids ready, fed, and out the door in time for school,” added Kane. “Knowing that their children can eat a healthy breakfast at school can be a huge relief for parents.
