Handley Herald: November 1, 2013

Handley-Elementary-SchoolWelcome, November!! The weather is reminding us that fall is upon us and winter is right around the corner. Please be sure students are dressing appropriately for the weather change. Coats will be needed. In addition, weather delays can be checked at the following website http://www.lpcsc.k12.in.us/ as well as on the radio at 96.7.

A special THANK YOU to those that attended the Parent/Teacher Conferences. They were well attended. Teachers are continuing to schedule with those that were unable to attend last week. Please contact the school if you need to reschedule.

Thank you to all of the families that attended SPOOKTACULAR BINGO hosted by our PTO. The night was a huge success with GREAT attendance and fun had by all.

PARENT TIP: Comprehension: Picture this

Good readers form mental pictures as they read. To improve your child’s comprehension, read a book without letting him see it. Then, ask him to guess what the illustrations look like. Examples: How are the characters dressed? Is the setting bright or gloomy?

TESTING!!

In order to monitor student progress and help teachers collect data that will help us examine student needs, a variety of programs are used. K-2 will participate in mCLASS; 3rd-5th will participate in Acuity. All students are working on quarterly writing prompts that are scored using rubrics similar to the ISTEP. In addition, we continue to use STAR to monitor the students’ level of comprehension. These activities will help us better identify the individual needs of students and provide remediation or enrichment as needed. It is important that students at all levels show growth and continue to achieve high levels of learning. THANKS to all of the parents and grandparents that stress the importance of a good work ethic at home. It is important that students are supported and encouraged when it comes to completing homework and giving their personal best in all that they do. THANKS for all you do to support your child and his/her learning!!

PERFECT ATTENDANCE & A/B HONOR ROLL

Research shows that good attendance is important in order for students to be successful. When a student is not in class, even if he/she “makes up” the work, there is a negative impact on learning. The teacher uses examples and models processes/strategies that benefit students and can’t be duplicated with just paper and pencil. Below is a list of students that were present EVERY DAY during the 1st grading period (Aug. 20-Oct. 23). Way to go!!!

Handley School is once again participating in an Attendance Incentive Program. Every child with perfect attendance (bell to bell) for the entire week will earn a ticket that is entered in a drawing at the end of the grading period. At the end of the nine week grading period, one name from each class is drawn. Those children win a free kids’ meal at a local restaurant. Buffalo Wild Wings sponsored the 1st grading period. Also, three students will be chosen to win a $20 gift card to Karah Tess Sporting Goods. Congratulations to the winners for the 1st grading period: Jadie Lopez, Kyle Whitehead, and Brandon Allen. Every week with perfect attendance means another chance to win!!

In addition, PERFECT ATTENDANCE ribbons were sent home with students earning perfect attendance for the grading period. A/B Honor Roll ribbons were presented to every child that earned all A’s & B’s for the first grading period as well as a coupon for a treat at Burger King. A/B honor roll names will appear in next month’s newsletter. What a great accomplishment for these students with perfect attendance and outstanding grades! Keep up the great work!

IMPORTANT!! Any child with perfect attendance (bell to bell) all year long, will earn a ride in a limo and lunch at Wendy’s.
