The Handley Harold, December 5, 2014

La-Porte-Community-School-CorporationDear Parents and Students –
Wishing you and your family a special holiday season. May you enjoy family, friends, and good times during the break. Remember that books make great gifts! Fifteen minutes a day can improve fluency and vocabulary. What a great way to spend special time with your child. ENJOY!

REMINDER: MORNING ROUTINE - IMPORTANT: Breakfast for non-bus students is at 8:15 a.m. We ask that non-bus students arrive at 8:15. This will allow all students to have enough time and space to enjoy their breakfast and make it to class on time. THANK YOU!

PERFECT ATTENDANCE & A/B HONOR ROLL: Attendance is directly related to success at school.

Handley School has an attendance program. Every child with perfect attendance (bell to bell) for the entire week will have his/her name entered in a drawing at the end of the grading period. At the end of the nine week grading period, one name from each class is drawn. Those children win a free kids’ meal at a local restaurant. Three names are chosen as winners of a $25 gift certificate to Karah Tess Sporting Goods. In addition, PERFECT ATTENDANCE ribbons were sent home with students earning perfect attendance for the grading period.

A/B Honor Roll ribbons were presented to every child that earned all A’s & B’s for the first grading period. What a great accomplishment for these students with perfect attendance and outstanding grades! Hope we can honor even more students with Perfect Attendance and A/B Honor Roll during the 2nd grading period.

TESTING! In order to monitor student progress and help teachers collect data that will help us examine student needs, a variety of programs are used. K-2 participates in mCLASS; 3rd-5th participates in Acuity. All students are working to improve writing skills. In addition, we continue to use STAR and AR to monitor the students’ level of comprehension. These activities will help us better identify the individual needs of students and provide remediation or enrichment as needed. It is important that students at all levels show growth and continue to achieve high levels of learning. THANKS to all of the parents and guardians that stress the importance of a good work ethic at home. It is important that students are supported and encouraged when it comes to completing homework and giving their personal best in all that they do. If you have any questions about your child’s academic performance or specific strengths and weaknesses, please contact his/her teacher. THANKS for all you do to support your child and his/her learning!

HOLIDAY SING ALONG: The Handley Family will celebrate the holiday season December 19 at 2:15 p.m. in the Handley gym. The students and staff will get in the holiday spirit by celebrating the season with song. We will share a JOLLY and FESTIVE time together!

ORNAMENT FOR OUR HANDLEY TREE: The Handley tree is in need of homemade Christmas ornaments. In your child’s Friday Folder is a template. If you and your child would like to decorate one of the ornaments and return it to school, we will hang it on the tree at the entrance. Feel free to create something of your choice and send that in, also. Happy Holidays!
