Egg-Ceptional Engineering at Barker Middle School

Barker-Middle-School-Collage-01-30-15Barker Middle School students took part in a "Humpty Dumpty" egg drop engineering challenge last week, testing devices designed to protect an egg dropped from the top of the school's gym bleachers. Homeroom teams were able to protect their fragile cargo using only the materials provided - file folders, drinking straws, rubber bands, string, and a plastic shopping bag.

As part of Barker's STEM curriculum focus, students take part in monthly engineering, math, and science challenges. Next up is a paper airplane contest. "We plan to invite some teams from our community to enter designs for that," said Barker Curriculum Coach Amy Hamann. "It's all about showing our students a real-world application for math and science, and showing them how much fun they can have in the process."
