For most people, Thanksgiving is synonymous with excess, but it’s also a time when many think of the lesser privileged. It’s the time of the year when food is in the minds of everyone, but not in everyone’s stomachs.
Over the past few weeks, Boston Middle School students and staff coordinated the annual canned food drive, which this time around yielded 5,146 cans of food for distribution to the hungry. Students were encouraged to bring in cans as often as possible over the two week period of time.
Each grade level competed in the school wide goal to beat last year’s total (4,500). The sixth grade collected 1,941 items, seventh grade 1,899 items and the eighth grade collected 1,306 items.
The items were donated to the Salvation Army Food Pantry of LaPorte. The Salvation Army recognizes the severity of this issue and has long been dedicated to helping families meet this basic need.
Principal Deborah Carter commended the students’ efforts, reiterating that so many families in the area are struggling. Mrs. Carter stated that she is so proud of all of the service learning that takes place in our building.
