A.K. Smith Career Center and Michigan City High School JAG Class Wins at 2016 Regional Competition

Fourteen A.K. Smith Career Center and Michigan City High School Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) students participated in the Region One Career Development Conference at Indiana University Northwest on January 29. Several students won awards in a regional competition held in conjunction with the conference.

The students competed against seven other JAG classes from Knox, Gary, East Chicago, and Hammond, in the following categories:

  • JAG Commercial – Lezly Davis and Pauline Lutton
  • Cover Design – Loren Crawford and Lezly Davis
  • Career Presentation – Anastasia Mitchell and Devin Newton
  • Creative Solutions – Shambriel Byrd
  • Critical Thinking Skills – Maudianna Clark, Anisa Higginbotham, and Pauline Lutton
  • Employability Skills – Gene Orzech and April Ratliff-Williams
  • Financial Literacy – Torri Allison
  • Outstanding Senior – Loren Crawford
  • Public Speaking – Jessica Macias
  • Writing Skills – Lezly Davis, Catherine Torres, and Jacob Williams

Mrs. Lori Wilson-Patterson, JAG Specialist, is pleased to announce the following winners:

  • Lezly Davis and Pauline Lutton, second place for the JAG Commercial
  • Jessica Macias, third place in Public Speaking
  • Loren Crawford received first place, Outstanding Senior. She will advance to the State Career Development Conference on March 3, 2016, where she will compete against other regional winners to become the Indiana JAG Outstanding Senior.

The JAG program is offered at the A. K. Smith Career Center and is designed to strengthen high school students’ skills in areas that will lead to success in post-secondary education and careers.
