Late Nurse’s Legacy Will Help Student Advance Studies

Melissa-McCaugheyFranciscan St. Anthony Health-Michigan City recently presented the annual Maria Petti Scholarship to Melissa McCaughey, of Westville, who is entering her junior year at Indiana University Northwest. She already has earned a bachelor of science degree in Organizational Leadership and Supervision, from Purdue North Central. Originally, McCaughey wanted to enter the field of hospital administration, but said she felt a call to enter the nursing profession, after several clinical experiences.

She plans to enter the field of perioperative nursing, to work with patients who are undergoing surgery. The scholarship, available since 2009, is given to medical field students annually, with funds raised by patients, colleagues and family of the late Petti, a perioperative nurse, who served for more than 35 years at the hospital, before her death in 2008. For more information on how to donate to the scholarship, call the Franciscan Alliance Foundation at (219) 661-3401.
