Handley-Elementary-SchoolHappy New Year!
A great quote to remember is “A good beginning makes a good end.” (English Proverb) We are off to a great beginning here at Handley! The students came back eager to share about their break and ready to learn. It is great to be back in a routine. The students and teachers will be setting goals for great accomplishments as we enter the 3rd grading period and start the 2nd half of the school year. This semester will be busy as we will participate in a variety of standardized tests: Study Island Assessments, ISTEP+ (3rd-5th) IREAD3 (3rd), and STAR testing (1st-5th). Attendance will be crucial as teachers are working with students to ensure students are prepared.

Please be aware that cold weather is upon us. Weather delays can be checked at the following website http://www.lpcsc.k12.in.us/ as well as on the radio at 96.7. Be sure your child is coming to school with a hat, gloves, boots, and a coat. You may want to send a sweatshirt that can be kept at school in case he/she becomes chilly in the classroom. If you need assistance with winter gear, please contact the school. We look forward to a great 2nd semester. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

PARENT TIP: Read aloud to your child each night
Want to spend quality time with your child, build his/her reading skills, and help him/her learn to love books? You do all three when you read aloud to your child. Here are some suggestions: 1) Read regularly: Aim for 10-15 minutes of bedtime reading for a peaceful end to the day. 2) Take turns choosing books: You child may want to hear old favorites again and again. Use your turn to expose your child to new books. 3) Let your child participate: Have your child turn the page or finish sentences that rhyme or fill in the words. 4) Be playful: Use different voices for different characters. Substitute your child’s name for the main character’s name, and use family members’ names for other characters. 5) You don’t have to be an expert reader – your child will love it when you read aloud because it is YOU!
