Michigan City High School MCJROTC Competes in 2017 Military Field Meet

The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) competed in a military field meet against Portage and South Bend Riley MCJROTCs. The competition had five events- a speed/equilibrium event, nicknamed the “Dizzy Izzy,” a stretcher relay, a fireman’s carry relay, a one mile relay, and the tug-of-war. The meet was very close, with Michigan City and Portage tying for first, and Riley right behind.

“Besides the physical fitness and spirit of competing, I think all the cadets involved enjoyed the companionship that an event like this generates,” said Senior Marine Instructor Major Tom McGrath. “One of the strong attractions of our program is that all cadets, regardless of their physical or mental abilities, feel welcome and a part of the program.”

Master Sergeant Jeff Benak, the Marine Instructor, echoed McGrath’s statement. “The JROTC is the first place that many of our students obtain a sense of accomplishment and being a contributor toward accomplishing a unit goal.”

The cadets will be busy throughout the summer. Some cadets will be attending a Cyber camp at Purdue University Northwest- Hammond June 19-23. The MCHS MCJROTC will be marching in three Independence Day parades over the July 4th weekend. Additionally, cadets will be supporting community service events, to include the preparation for and supporting the school district’s Back-To-School Rally August 8, 9 and 10. Cadet will also be doing voluntary drill team practices in preparation for next year’s military drill season. All MCJROTC activities are done at no cost to the school district or cadet.
