As part of the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences lecture series, Purdue Northwest welcomes University of Chicago professor Ada Palmer who will discuss, “Censorship and Information Control from the Inquisition to the Present.”
The presentation will take place at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 28 in the Center for Innovation and Visual Simulation, 6937 Woodmar Ave. on the Hammond Campus. The event is free of charge and open to the public. For more information call 219-989-2272 or email rpollack@pnw.edu.
Summarizing her discussion, Palmer observes, “We tend to envision censorship as carried out by a government, a centralized institution, a looming distant them….By examining the many different kinds of people who have voluntarily carried out censorship, with different goals and motives…we can reexamine the myth…and introduce the far more common forms of local, well-meaning, commerce driven censorship.”
Palmer, who received her Ph.D. from Harvard, is Assistant Professor of Early Modern European History and a member of the University of Chicago’s Renaissance Studies faculty and the Stevanovich Institute on the Formation of Knowledge. She is a published author and has given readings, presentations, and performances around the world.
