Whiting Unites as Superhero Saturday Dominates Downtown Whiting

Heroes filled the streets of the City of Whiting as they gathered downtown to celebrate the total vanquishing of evil doers everywhere. Fearless heroes leapt off the pages of DC and Marvel alike and performed daring stunts and wielded their powers by demolishing brick walls, hitting their target with giant boulders, and forging their balloon weapons in the name of all things good and super!

Fun was for the whole family as the city hosted its annual Superhero Saturday, another quirky and exciting event for the community to take part in. Heroes of all ages unearthed plenty of fun waiting for them. No mask? No problem! Kids were able to decorate their own or opted to have their faces painted by a pro. Comic book fans stopped by the pop-up comic shop to pick up a must-have from tables of superhero collectibles. But it wouldn’t be complete with a photo with their favorite hero – or a giant blow-up Stay Puffed Marshmallow Man.

Bob Anderson of Whiting was there with his ghostbusting friends from the Windy City Ghostbusters for his fourth Superhero Saturday. At the Ghostbusters booth, kids could check out the equipment, play games, and have their photos taken with fully outfitted Ghostbusters.

“We love that we get to just be ourselves,” Anderson said. “This is what we do for fun!”

Marissa Carrizales of East Chicago brought her kids to Superhero Saturday for the first time because it’s “cool for them to see the superheroes walk the streets.”

Christina Reynolds came from Chicago to spend Superhero Saturday with her daughter and grandkids, who live in Whiting.

“It’s a nice way to bring the grandkids out and watch them have a good time,” Reynolds said, fondly.

Paul Bachusz of Whiting was happy to spend the Saturday with his grandson, who traveled all the way from Indianapolis to meet Captain America. Superhero Saturday is a special thing they do together every year.

“It’s nice seeing the community come out and seeing the kids have fun with all the superheroes,” Bachusz said. “It’s a fun time and it’s good for the city.”

Hannah Denys, Clark High School Junior, helped as a volunteer with the National Honors Society.

“We’re here trying to help out our community and give the kids something fun to do,” Denys said. “I like seeing how excited the kids are and they’re all dressed up. They’re all so happy to be superheroes.”

It was all in a day’s work at Superhero Saturday as Whiting kids and their families met the heroes they read about, see on the big screen, and continue to look up to as role models. The event showed kids of all ages that they, too, can be a superhero in their community. For more information about upcoming events in Whiting, please visit www.whitingindiana.com.
