La Porte County Solid Waste District Celebrating America Recycles Day

recycle-greenAmerica Recycles Day is Nov. 15, and the La Porte County Solid Waste District is celebrating all month with fun educational events for the whole family!

The Solid Waste District has partnered with Al's Supermarkets to provide events at each of their La Porte County stores leading up to America Recycles Day. The first 50 people at each event to bring plastic grocery and food packaging bags for recycling will be able to exchange them for a reusable shopping bag, thanks to generous donations from Al's, our curbside collection contractor, Able Disposal, and NiSource. Play games and score giveaways that promote recycling at the following events:

  • Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Al's, 3535 Franklin St., Michigan City.
  • Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Al's, 1002 N. Karwick, Michigan City.
  • Nov. 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Al's, 1340 W. State Road 2, La Porte.
  • Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. 4 p.m., at Al's, 702 E. Lincolnway, La Porte.

Information will also be available on all of the Solid Waste District's programs, including its drop-off sites at Al's Supermarkets to recycle batteries, cell phones and printer cartridges.

The Solid Waste District will also sponsor a plastic bag exchange from 2 to 6 p.m. Nov. 15 at its office, 2857 W. State Road 2. Residents will be able to get a reusable bag if they bring in plastic bags to exchange along with non-perishable food items to be donated to the Salvation Army. Don't forget to indulge in cookies and punch while you're there!

Recycling is the easiest thing we can all do to improve our community, conserve natural resources, and create green jobs. America Recycles Day is only the beginning -- together we can make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year!
