As part of a national initiative to help local military personnel, veterans and their families gain access to valuable services, Purdue University Calumet is co-hosting the fourth annual Northwest Indiana STAND DOWN Friday, Aug. 21.
Northwest Indiana STAND DOWN is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Indiana National Guard Limited Army Aviation Support Facility, 6289 Industrial Highway, Gary.
During STAND DOWN, enlisted personnel, veterans and their families can connect with such services as legal aid, education, counseling, health screenings and medical services, as well as gain information about employment, substance abuse treatment, the Veterans Administration and Social Security benefits.

There also will be food and activities for children. All attendees are required to have a photo ID or veteran identification.
Joining Purdue Calumet and its From Boots to Books: Veterans & Student Service Members Academic Support Program as sponsors are Standard Bank and Trust and the Northwest Indiana Veterans Council.
“We introduced STAND DOWN four years ago in Northwest Indiana to combat homelessness and make important services available to Lake County’s 36,000 military veterans,” Purdue Calumet From Boots to Books Assistant Director Akili Shakur said.
