MCHS MCJROTC Drill Team Earns Awards at Indianapolis Drill Competition

The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) placed in four of the six events at the Pike High School Military Drill Meet held in Indianapolis on February 25th. The cadets earned a first place trophy in the Armed Platoon category, defeating 11 other schools. That unit was commanded by Cadet First Sergeant Michael Livengood.

The Wolves earned third place in both Unarmed Platoon and Armed Exhibition, with both of those units commanded by Cadet Captain Arturo Moreno. Cadet Second Lieutenant Ana Nowatzke led the Unarmed Exhibition Platoon to a fourth place finish.

In the individual competition, Cadet Private First Class Tuahaven Maxie finished fifth out of 400 cadets.

“This was a very competitive meet,” said Senior Marine Instructor Major Tom McGrath. “Our cadets really represented our school and program well.”

Master Sergeant Jeff Benak, the Marine Instructor, was also impressed with the performance of the cadets. “This was the most competitive meet where both of our exhibition platoons really performed to the best of their abilities.”

The Wolves final scheduled drill meet is March 18th in Fort Wayne at Concordia High School. They should know within two weeks if they have been selected to compete in the first national MCJROTC Championships being held in a suburb of Dallas, Texas on April 22nd. If selected, the trip will be conducted at no expense to the school district or the cadets. It will be funded by the U.S. Marine Corps, with augmentation from the MCJROTC Booster Club.

Besides the drill team, the MCJROTC will be supporting the boys’ basketball sectional and regional tournaments being held the first two weeks of March at MCHS. They will also provide assistance during Parent/Teacher conference on March 15th, and a Color Guard for the Disabled Veterans of America dinner on March 25th.
