Michigan City High School MCJROTC Supports School and Community in April 2017

The Michigan City High School (MCHS) Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (MCJROTC) continued to support MCHS and the Michigan City are community by participating in numerous community service projects. During April, a month with six no-school days due to Spring Break and Good Friday, cadets supported seven events.

They were the Comcast Cares project at the Stepping Stone Women’s Shelter, Earth Day at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds, four track meets and a dance at Barker Middle School. The cadets are also scheduled to participate in the Dunebrook Walk for Children in Valparaiso on April 29.

“Spring is always a busy time for us,” said Senior Marine Instructor Major Tom McGrath “After a busy military drill team season, some of the cadets want to relax after that grinding schedule. Our seniors are getting ready for their post graduation plans. It is a challenge to meet the many requests we receive for support.”

Master Sergeant Jeff Benak commented on the dedication of the cadets. “Some of our cadets really step up, despite their busy schedules, to help our school and community.”

The remainder of the school year will be busy for the cadets. Following the Dunebrook Walk on April 29th, the cadets will have at least one community service event each weekend through the high school graduation on June 4. Those events are the Michigan City Garden project on May 6; Ivy Tech Community College Graduation on May 13; the Veterans Biker Rally at the LaPorte American Legion on May 21; and the Michigan City Memorial Day parade and ceremony on May 29th. There are also events on weekdays that the cadets will support- the Barker Middle School Career Day on May 10; another Barker dance on May 12; St. Stan’s Fair on May 18; Pine Elementary School Carnival on May 19; and the Veteran Biker Freedom Ride on May 23.
