The Michigan City Police Department received thirty (30) Intoximeters, Inc, Alco-Sensor FST (Portable Breath Test) units from an Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) grant, that Det./Sgt. Ken Havlin applied for. Each Portable Breath Test unit came with 200 breath tubes and other supplies for the units.
Chief Mark Swistek and Assistant Chief Kevin Urbanczyk are happy to get the ICJI grant for the needed updated resources that the Alco-Sensor FST units will provide the Michigan City Police Officers.
These Portable Breath Test (PBT’s) units will be utilized by the Michigan City Police Officers to help detect impaired drivers who are impaired by alcohol. In some cases, a driver’s impairment may not be from alcohol but from illegal drugs or misuse of prescription drugs. Once the Officer determines that a driver’s impairment is not from alcohol, the Officer will request a drug elevation from one of our Drug Recognition Experts (DRE).
