Solid Waste District of La Porte County Citizen’s Advisory Committee Elects Kiel As New Chairman

la-porte-solid-waste-district-logoThe Citizen’s Advisory Board met January 9, 2018 at the offices of the La Porte County Solid Waste District.

The first item on the agenda was the election of new officers for the 2018 year. Dick Reel nominated Justin Kiel for Chairman and Jennifer Olsen nominated Tom Larson for Vice Chairman. Those present were Paul Brooks, Amy Feikes, Justin Kiel, Jennifer Olsen, Jim Michaels, Dick Reel. Those absent were Juli Charlesworth, Jim Irwin, and Tom Larson.

The minutes from the December 13, 2017 Joint District Board/ CAC were approved. Director Clay Turner informed the board that Sacha Gee-Burns, Environmental Educator/ Public Outreach for the District will be taking over the Citizens Advisory Committee. Her goal is to get the committee involved in more activities and engaged in more projects. She also wants to bring in public speakers on different recycling topics.

Turner also presented the CAC Board with the 2018 HHW collection schedule. He stated that the District is working to find a date to arrange for a South County collection as well.

CAC Board announced that the District Board voted to reappoint Tom Larson and Jim Michaels another two-year term on the Citizen’s Advisory Committee.

The 2017 Collection totals were presented by Turner. He stated that 65,790 cubic yards were removed from the Zigler Road Green Waste Site and 1, 533.31 tons removed from the Westville Compost Site. He stated that the District collected 27, 440 lbs of appliances, 76, 694 lbs of tires, and 554, 392.55 lbs of electronics during the 2017 collections throughout the year. He also informed the Committee that the HHW program collected 117, 728.9 lbs of Household Hazardous Waste. There were no comments from the public.

The next Citizen’s Advisory Committee Meeting will take place April 11th at 1:30pm and will be a joint meeting with the Solid Waste Board of Directors.
