Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer announced to the public on Friday February 27 that construction will soon begin on Michigan City’s new police station. A 42,000 gross square foot, state of the art facility in the city’s Eastport district will replace the over 50-years-old station in place now.

“From my first day in office, I have always stressed how important I feel it is to provide exceptional public health and safety to our citizens, visitors, and potential investors,” Mayor Meer said. “The new Michigan City Police Station will be an up-to-date, state of the art facility that will provide our men and women another tool in their efforts to deliver that high level of safety to each and every one of us.”

Of all the events we see throughout the year, graduations and commencements are the ones that most embody our good news mission. To see all the hard work put in and out of the classroom by students, parents, teachers, coaches, families and friends culminate in one event, with everyone across the school celebrating the same thing, it's just awesome.

We will have literally thousands of photos from the Class of 2015, just like we did last year, and we couldn't be happier to share these shots of all of these thousands of Northwest Indiana's best and brightest students.

On August 1, 2015, the Michigan City Police force lost a valiant officer. In the wake of tragedy, Rob Grant’s friends and family joined together to host a benefit for Grant’s daughters. On November 15th they gathered at the La Porte County Fairgrounds to honor their friend. The Rob Grant Benefit raised money to deposit into an education savings account for Rob Grant’s daughters. Makayla, 8, and Maura, 5, have accounts at PNC Bank for anyone else who would like to donate. A booth just inside the door was collecting monetary donations.

In order to initiate change in the world, one must begin with an idea. Nate Loucks, lead pastor of State Street Community Church and president of The Pax Center, had an idea and has brought it to life. He planted his church five years ago with the core value of neighborhood engagement.

Getting to know the needs of those around them in the community, the church opened food and clothing pantries and began hosting a weekly community meal that serves about 100 people every Monday. Everyone is welcome to come regardless of social or economic class, and everyone just sits and eats together, sharing stories and enjoying each other’s company.

The Greater La Porte Chamber of Commerce took the afternoon to welcome some new teachers and administrators from across the La Porte County area, highlighting the newest educators ready to start the new school year.

“The fact that we’re here today is a sign that the business community appreciates the quality of education in La Porte County, along with their support of local business,” says Greater La Porte Chamber of Commerce President Mike Seitz.

On Friday, the United Way of La Porte County filled the Stardust Event Center at the Blue Chip Casino to celebrate their annual Gala in style this year with a ‘James Bond’ theme. Tuxedos, black ties, and ritzy gowns were standard attire at the fundraising event that featured martinis, a James Bond look-a-like and a few Bond Girls who also provided the evening's entertainment.

“This year's Gala is the ‘Secret Agent Gala’,” said Kris Pate, Executive Director of the United Way of LaPorte County. ”We’re taking advantage of this being the opening of the new ‘Spectre’ movie and Belvedere is a sponsor for the event, and also in the new James Bond movie he asks for a Belvedere Martini. We have some of the Special Edition bottles here that light up and I gotta say it’s all really exciting.”

6th Annual United Way Dodgeball Fundraiser Brings Together Fun and Competition for a Good Cause

The 6th Annual United Way Dodgeball Fundraiser was held at the Scholl Student Center at Marquette Catholic High School in Michigan City. Organizations, fans and dodgeball fanatics young and old came out to support their team, cheer on their organization and raise money for a good cause.

16 teams were present at the event, representing various organizations across La Porte County all of which were playing for the opportunity to raise money for the United Way of La Porte County, which help to support the over 25 La Porte United Way centers along with other organizations including Michiana Resources and the MCPD Explorers.

What this social club is, is a group of best friends from the area that encourage fun, love, and happiness in Northwest Indiana. Sometimes that means relaxing on the lake, encouraging people to smile on their group’s Facebook page, and of course, social outings to various restaurants around The Region.

For 45 years, the La Porte Jaycees have brought local children in need on their Deserving Children’s Shopping Tour. This year they united with their sister group in Michigan City to reach double the children. The first of their two-day tour was held at the La Porte Fairgrounds, where children and their escorts gathered to eat before shopping.

At the beginning of each school year a representative from the Jaycees gets in contact with the counselors at the local schools. The counselors give them names of students who would most benefit from the Shopping Tour program.

With her recent graduation from the prestigious military university West Point, Cox is always ready for her next challenge.

Despite her association with the most prestigious military academy in the US, Cox’s immediate family was not in the military. The drive and desire to serve her country was instilled in her through her father.
