Healthcare Foundation of La Porte Awards Prize for Being Active

Healthcare Foundation of La Porte Awards Prize for Being Active

The Healthcare Foundation of La Porte (HFL) awarded its winter Get Active, Get Fit! prize on January 16, 2018 to Maddox Maxfield, a five-year-old from La Porte. His prize was his very first brand new bike and Spiderman helmet - his favorite superhero.

Even through winter is here, it is important for children to continue being active. Sledding, building snowmen, and playing outside in the snow are all great ways to be active for 30 minutes or more each day. If the cold is keeping kids inside, find activities that will keep them up and moving around like going to a local gym or joining an after school athletic program.

Maddox has stayed active this winter through the pre-school program at the YMCA. Among other community partners like the city and county parks and the library, the YMCA is a key partner in promoting Get Active, Get Fit!

Get Active, Get Fit! was created by HFL in conjunction with pediatricians and the city and county park departments to encourage children and families to get active. Children just need to be active for at least 30 minutes on 14 consecutive or non-consecutive days. The child or their parent will complete and turn in a 14-day activity log that details the activity that the child participated in each day.

There is no limit to the number of activity logs a child can enter, and each log counts as one entry to a quarterly prize drawing where one child’s activity log is drawn at random as the winner. That child has the choice of what prize they would like to receive: a bike, fitness tracker, sports package, etc.

There are multiple ways to enter an activity log into a drawing, including a mobile phone app. The goal of the app is to make it easier for parents and families to keep track by allowing you to fill the log in as you finish activities. Once you have filled in 14 activities, the app will automatically submit your log. Learn more about the different ways to participate in the program at hflaporte.org/get-active or sign up for the mobile app at getactivelaporte.org.
