Childrens-Film-Festival-2013Lubeznik Center for the Arts announces participation in the third annual Coastline Children’s Film Festival. Featured films include Girls Rock on Saturday, February 9 2013 at 10:30 am and a selection of short films from the New York International Children’s Film Festival on Sunday, February 10 2013 at 3:00 pm.

The Coastline Children’s Film Festival (CCFF) is an annual festival occurring in the first two weeks of February. CCFF began two years ago in Berrien County, Michigan and is now expanding to Indiana via involvement with Lubeznik Center for the Arts.

Seeing a movie can be like a visit to a wonder-filled land we may never come across in our everyday lives,” said Leslie Sullivan, coordinator of the festival. “Building off the success of the film screening this past fall, Lubeznik Center for the Arts is excited to present such an eclectic lineup of films to our patrons as part of the film festival,” said Carolyn Saxton, Executive Director.

Girls Rock highlights the experiences of campers, aged eight through 18, at the Portland Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for girls. Campers at Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp have one week to select a band, choose an instrument they have never played before, and write a song to perform in front of more than 700 people. During the week long program, campers learn from female rockers, including Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney, about topics including self-empowerment, self-defense, and anger management. Girls Rock follows the experiences of campers, Laura, a Korean adoptee obsessed with death metal; Misty, a girl emerging from an environment of meth addiction, homelessness and gang activity; and Amelia, an eight-year-old who writes experimental rock songs about her dog Pipi.
