Downtown La Porte Boasts Excellent Ice Carvings During WinterFest

Residents meandered through the cold and snow in downtown La Porte on Friday night to catch a glimpse of the free Ice Sculpture Demonstrations. This free event is another part of La Porte’s ongoing WinterFest taking place during January.

The free and dazzling ice art was created by members of the Michiana Ice Carvers Association. Stations were set at Dick’s Bar; IU Health La Porte Hospital (which sponsored two sculptures); Angelos & Radin, Beige; Drayton; Sirugo & Elliot; Engstrom Jewelers; La Porte Savings Bank; Suds on State; the Kessler lofts, Hendricks & Associates; and Magic Sports.

The twelve sculptures in total represented a wide range of things. Terrsa Hadden carved a flitting fish, while Kevin Lutten crafted a giant diamond ring. First time professional ice carver Patrick Hensen skillfully carved the General Insurance Services’s logo.

At the end of the night a gleaming washing machine stood outside Studs on State and an intricately carved horse stood on the corner of Lincolnway.

Spectator Kayla Dunbar proclaimed, “It is just so amazing how the carvers can take a block of ice and turn it into a work of art.”

WinterFest will continue into the weekend with Ice Fishing Derby, Snowball Softball Adult Coed Tournament, the Closest to the Pin Contest, and family ceramics class taking place tomorrow and will end on Sunday with the free Fun Run, carriage rides and Valentine’s Day card making.
