St. Mary Medical Center Raises Funds for Cardiovascular Research Fund with 2017 Coffee & Canvas Event

Community Healthcare System’s St. Mary Medical Center hosted a special Coffee & Canvas event on Saturday morning at the Portage Lakefront Park & Riverwalk. The event allowed a group of people the opportunity to look out on the lakeshore, and use its elements to create their own painting, with the help of a local artist.

Attendees enjoyed a view of Lake Michigan while they painted, drank coffee and chatted for a great cause. People of all skill levels enjoyed the morning together.

“I’m glad people will go home with a painting and know that they’ve just helped out an important cause,” said Kathy Eckert, who lead the painting instruction for the event.

The event was a fundraiser for the Community Healthcare System cardiovascular research fund. Cardiovascular research through St. Marys aims to improve the heart health of the community through the advancement of knowledge. The staff works hard to bring the latest and greatest treatment and options to Northwest Indiana.

“Our Cardiovascular Research helps to bring advanced treatment options for cardiovascular care to our community. Instead of traveling to Chicago, or even farther, patients can participate in the latest clinical trials here at home,” said Karin Woodside, Community Outreach Specialist with St. Mary Medical Center.

“I think it’s important that we support research. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women and I’m happy to support an event that helps women prosper,” said Kasandra Brown, an attendee of the event.

The event is just one of the National Heart Month events that St. Mary Medical Center hosts. Hearts of Hope is coming up soon, which helps the community honor someone they love and support cardiac care in our community. With Hearts of Hope, a $5 donation helps fund important research trials and studies for health disease. A $15 donation allows you to send your honoree a wonderful Hearts of Hope lapel pin. That special person will receive a card, letting them know they fill our hearts with love and joy. Donations can be made by visiting www.comhs.org/heartsofhope, or visiting the hospital to participate.

Hearts of Hope will also have a physical tree lighting ceremony in memory of those we’ve lost. Before the tree lighting, Dr. Kais Yehyawi, MD, FACC, FSCAI, will present about the latest treatments in cardiovascular research. The evening kicks off in the West Lobby of the St. Mary Medical Center at 5:30 p.m. on February 15th. The address is 1500 S. Lake Park Avenue, Hobart, Indiana.

Attendees of the presentation will receive a voucher for a free lipid profile and AIC glucose screening, don't miss it!
