Community Walks in Support of Heroin Awareness

A few raindrops didn’t stop the 350 dedicated walkers and runners from participating in the Heroin Awareness Walk on Friday, June 28, 2013. A sea of blue made their way through the streets of downtown La Porte, starting at the La Porte County Family YMCA. The walk was organized as part of Mayor Milo’s Fitness Fridays program.

“We don’t want this to be a one time thing,” Sonshine Troche, founder of the Worthy Women Recovery Home, said. “We want to go beyond this. When somebody says hey, I want to help fight the drugs and fight the substance abuse, I am all about it.”

And that’s exactly what Chris Day said. Day recently lost a son to heroin. He decided it was time to be proactive and get the message of the danger of drug addiction out to the public. Together Day and Troche reached out to both the Mayor and the community to organize the awareness walk.

“It’s a passion, to not only help adults, but the teenagers,” Troche said. “If we can get them while they are young and get them turned around – that is the primary focus.”

The Worthy Women Recovery Home is a Christian home that provides recently incarcerated women with re-entry programs and the life tools needed to reduce and eliminate substance abuse and addiction.

Free group meetings are held for women at the La Porte Library on Wednesday evenings at 5:15 p.m. On Thursdays, women meet at the Marquette Mall on the 7th floor at 4:30 p.m. The Teen Character Counts group meets Mondays during the school year, and on July 18, 2013 the Third Thursday Teen Talks group will begin.
