Cool Ice Sculptures Kick off WinterFest

2014-ice-sculpturesThe frigid weather kept just about everyone inside their cozy keeps on Friday. Well, just about everyone. For a few brave and optimistic souls, the cold is a prime environment to get crafty. No, we aren't talking about snowflake origami, we're talking about ice carving!

In downtown La Porte, ice sculpture demonstrations kicked off the annual WinterFest celebration. They donned the proper tools and set to work creating interesting images using giant hunks of ice as their frozen canvases. Spectators witnessed as the ice transformed into different objects such as a ring, a horse, a running man, and other things.

This event is organized by the La Porte Park and Recreation Department. It's a multi-day event that always takes place in late January as a means to kick the wintery woes that often settle in at this time of year.

Other things happened in days following like horse-drawn carriage rides, children's Valentine craft classes, a pancake breakfast, co-ed softball tournament, a street hockey clinic hosted by the Chicago Blackhawks, family ceramics, a fun run and an ice fishing derby.

The ice fishing derby is taking place on February 1st and registration is still open. For more information follow the La Porte Park and Recreation Department Facebook page or call (219) 326-9600.
