Orange You Glad It’s Fall?

Autumn is here! And you know that that means? It means sweater weather, boot season, pumpkin flavored everything, colorful leaves adorning the trees, and...apple picking. And the best place to go pick said apples is at an orchard. I recently made a trip to Garwood Orhcards to take part in the yearly activity.

Upon arrival, my cohorts and I grabbed a ride on one of the tractor-drawn wagons that escorts Garwood guests to and from the orchard. Our first stop was to the rows of trees that were laden with Honeycrisp apples.

With future snacking and baking ideas in our minds we picked the colorful gems from the trees, filling our bags until they were uncomfortably heavy. After that, another wagon took us to a section of trees that had Jonathan apples. These, among other types of apples, were ready for Upick. And pick we did.

Garwood Orchards hold many different types of fruit and vegetable crops that they allow guests to pick during the peak seasons. The only time Garwood Orchards is closed is from January to April. This means that produce, baked goods, local meats and cheeses, canned goods, candy, and other delicious things are sold throughout the year. Even in December, people can come and pick out a Christmas tree to help make the holidays more festive at Garwood's.

"They are very nice to work for and very nice people," Shirley Waldrop, cashier and stocker at Garwood Orchards said. "It's kind of like a family here...There is a demand for all of the items that we sell which is why we carry so many different products."

After we finished picking, we all came back to the indoor market and perused the aisles. There were many locally grown and created foodstuffs for sale and we added a few extra items to our cart before proceeding to checkout.

All in all, it was a great day with some great people at a great orchard.

Be sure to come out to Garwood Orchards this fall to get some great apples before they are gone!
