A La Porte County Life in the Spotlight: Jamie Miller

jamiemillerWhen doing everything possible for doing what’s best for the community, the Unity Foundation of La Porte is there on the front lines. For Jaimie Miller, she is on the front lines of giving people comfort and ensuring the wishes of those who seek her out.

“When I was five, I was that girl on the block who always wanted to help,” Miller said, “I used to pull wild flowers out of old lady’s yards whenever I could.”

From an early start, Miller has had the drive to do anything and everything to make sure someone gets help. It ranged from helping old woman push a grocery cart to their cart in the snow, all the way to something as simple, but powerful, as a simple smile to anybody who passes her throughout her day.

“Time, talent, and treasure,” Miller explained. “And sometimes your smile can be someone’s treasure.”

Miller is a very family oriented person. She lives on 4 acres of lush land, in which she uses for her vegetable garden and herb garden. She uses all natural ingredients, and raises her family on good rules and respect. She believes that family is essentially important to a person. She met her husband through a group of fishers when she first moved to La Porte. Since then, she has found a love of fishing, and often goes fishing on the lake with her family and friends. She also brought in another family for ten weeks from Japan who came to study abroad and learn all about the American culture.

Miller is also very excited about working with the Unity Foundation on the new park being constructed on Pine Lake Ave. This park will be gifted to the city, and provides the best spot on the lake for families to come and create new memories. It is all coming from the Foundation, and she hopes that people will remember this park and visit it often in order to enjoy everything it will have to offer. Being in a community that surrounds a gorgeous lake needs to have the proper area in which time can be enjoyed and people will be drawn to La Porte by how it is developing with its new centralized locations.

“Some people want to change the world, but I want to change a good portion of my own world,” Miller said.

Miller has devoted a lot of her time helping people. She has opened many doors to people who have come to her for help. Miller used to work for Housing Opportunities, a great company that gives shelter to the homeless. They have connections to Work One and many other places that are devoted to giving the most to those that have the least. She then got a call from Maggie Sparks, asking Miller to join the Unity Foundation. She then became the Development Officer for them.

“To serve and community and everybody in it is really awesome,” Miller said.

She has worked with many people, trying to bring people in and get them interested in what the Unity Foundation is all about. Her outgoing and positive personality is one that people are drawn to. During the morning news of such tragic events, Miller is one of those people that turns the T.V off and takes a deep breath of fresh air all so she can get ready to push the negativity away so she may spread the much needed positivity.

Miller has big plans for the future of the community. She sees the potential and wishes to see the people brought back together like La Porte once was. She has the power, and she wants to use it to continue helping people and to continue opening more doors for La Porte. Her positive, down to Earth vision and personality is one that needs to resonate within the community. She is taking it one step at a time, so therefore, inspiration is sometimes meant to take time to settle down in a community.

“Join me,” Miller started, “do a little something, do a little bit, no matter how big or small.”
