A La Porte County Life in the Spotlight: Farrah Goodall

Michigan City senior Farrah Goodall has a great understanding of hard work and keeping busy. With five advanced placement classes rounding out her seven class course load, plus her involvement in a number of other activities, Goodall has a lot going on.

Many would struggle to keep up or would complain about the amount of work they’re doing. Goodall, however, enjoys the challenge and the constant activity that surrounds her.

“I’m on a hectic schedule, and I like school because it’s a challenge. If I weren't taking those classes, I’d be bored,” explained Goodall. “Some of my best friends are taking those classes, so I have people to hang out with and study with. I never go a day hating school; I’m always learning something interesting.”

Part of that hectic schedule is a journalism class, where Goodall serves as the editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, The Cityzen. While she was interested in newspaper during her sophomore year of school, she didn't have the chance to participate in the course until her junior year.

“Junior year, I fit it in, and I loved it and found that I’m good at it. I was good at reporting and like taking pictures,” said Goodall. “I’m working on a lot this year, and I’ve got a great news team. I’m really excited to see what we do.”

In addition to the newspaper, Goodall is involved in the Stand Committee and National Honor Society, which she enjoys due to the governmental aspects. But one thing she’s particularly excited about is her involvement in Basketball. Serving as the Senior Captain for the Varsity team, she’s glad for the many benefits the practices and games offer to her.

“I love the hard work. It’s such a stress relief, even though I’m sweating. If I’ve had a hard day at school, I can go there to clear my mind, and I don’t have any problems,” explained Goodall.

Her interest in basketball started in the eighth grade when she switched from private to public school. Basketball gave Goodall a way to fit in and develop friendships at a time when she didn't feel she had a place to belong.

“It was a huge change. I met a few of the girls from the basketball team, and they had me try out. I was horrible that year, but I worked really hard and had a lot of fun. I made new friends, and it helped me to fit in and find an anchor. I no longer felt out of place,” said Goodall.

Basketball still serves that purpose for her as she retains amazing friendships with her teammates. Creating lasting friendships can be difficult in school, but for Goodall, forging those through sports is an amazing opportunity.

“I would say the friends I have, they’re like sisters to me. I wouldn’t trade those relationships for anything,” said Goodall.

Outside of school activities, Goodall is also a #1StudentNWI writer, where she gains real world experience in the journalism realm. Representing Michigan City High School, she loves getting the opportunity to share positive news from her school and community.

“I like reporting on positive stuff especially from Michigan City. It’s a great place, and I like living here and being a part of showing people what we’re doing,” said Goodall.

The experience gained from these activities is important to her as it prepares her for the real world. After high school, she hopes to attend college and study either philosophy or political science. With ambitions to head to law school, Goodall plans to leave her options open for the time being to ensure she can continue on and make a difference somewhere, even a small one.
