#1StudentNWI: Distinguished Students Steal the Show at Michigan City High School

Student Profile: Tyler Siegmund
Tyler Siegmund is a freshman at MCHS. He plays baseball and football, but baseball is his favorite.

“I love playing it and watching it,” said Tyler.

His favorite part about MCHS is getting to participate in sports; he enjoys being with his teammates. Tyler chooses to be a part of his sports teams because of the physical activity they offer.

“Sports keep me active,” he said. “They’re a great way to get exercise.” Tyler likes La Porte County because of the beach and Lake Michigan. He has fun swimming in the lake and the views of the beach. Tyler is also looking forward to summer vacation, including preparing for football season.

Michigan-City-HS-1StudentNWI-May-2Staff Profile: Mrs. Howisen
Mrs. Howisen is the MCHS Choir teacher. She has been teaching for eleven years, and three of those years have been spent at MCHS. Her favorite part about teaching is working with the students.

“I love getting to work with the same kids for multiple years,” said Mrs. Howisen. “This allows me to see them grow, develop, and mature. I also love teaching someone who has really never sung before, and helping them develop a love of music and a passion for singing.”

Along with teaching choir, Mrs. Howisen is the vocal director for the fall musicals and is the head of the choral department. Her favorite part about La Porte County is being by the beach.

“It’s really nice that you can just head to the lake and the dunes without having to drive for hours,” she said. Her other interests include opera shows, and she tries to see an opera in Chicago each year. She also likes to cross stitch and goes to church every week. Mrs. Howisen is looking forward to teaching a fourth year at MCHS next year.

“(Next year’s) graduating seniors came in with me as freshmen, so it will be nice to see how far they’ve come under my instruction in four years,” said Mrs. Howisen. Thank you, Mrs. Howisen, for being our Staff Profile!

Michigan-City-HS-1StudentNWI-May-3Color Run for Junior Class
The MCHS Junior class sponsored a Color Run in Washington Park on April 23. The run began at the pavilion on the beach, and the course went down Lake Shore Drive, onto the beach, and back through streets between Stop 1 and Stop 5. There were lots of student participants, as well as community members. The Junior class thought of the idea after Vice President Sarah Smith participated in a Color Run and thought it’d be a great way to raise money for Prom. The run was not timed, as the Color Run’s goal is to encourage exercise and fun with friends and family, versus competition. Runners and walkers alike had a great time.

“It was really fun and a great experience,” said junior Madlen Farless. “I would definitely do it again.”

Class president Kaitlyn Steinhiser is extremely grateful for all the sponsors, especially Walgreen.

“Walgreens was crazy awesome and gave us a ton of signs and giveaways,” said Steinhiser.

Other sponsors for the Color Run were Young People’s Theater, the Foreign Exchange Program, Midwest Eye Consultant, Horizon Bank, and Piranhas Swim Club. Thank you to all of the participants, volunteers, and sponsors who made the Color Run a success!

Michigan-City-HS-1StudentNWI-May-4Foreign Language Honor Society Inductions
Juniors and seniors were inducted into the Foreign Language Honor Society on April 28. Students were recognized for their dedication and hard work in Spanish, French, German, or Japanese. Members must hold a 3.0 GPA and plan on entering a fourth year of foreign language study. Inductees and current members met in the MCHS library in the morning for breakfast. Inductees signed their names in the member book and received their certificates. Current members and senior inductees received cords for graduation. Each language said a pledge to promise to continue to work hard and love their foreign languages and cultures. Congratulations to all of the inductees and current members!

1920s Hollywood Prom
MCHS juniors and seniors are getting ready to dance the night away at Prom on Friday, May 13. The theme is 1920s Hollywood, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s book, The Great Gatsby. Prom will be at the Blue Chip Hotel in Michigan City, and students can walk the red carpet beginning at 6:00pm. Dinner will be served at 7:00pm, with dancing and dessert to follow. At 11:30pm, Prom-goers will be invited to Superhero Post Prom at City Lanes Bowling Alley. Students will be able to bowl and dance, as well as win raffle prizes such as mini fridges, computers, tablets, and gift cards. Tickets are $50, and school IDs are required for entrance into both Prom and Post Prom. Students are excited to have a great time with friends and celebrate the end of the school year.

Distinguished Graduates
There are 21 MCHS students who have earned the title “Distinguished Graduates.” These students have a GPA of 3.8 or higher for all four years of high school. Distinguished graduates will get to sit in the front rows at the graduation ceremony and will be the first 21 students to graduate. The students also don’t have to take final exams, and they will get to do different activities at school while their other classmates are testing.

On June 2, the distinguished graduates and their families will attend a ceremony and dinner at Pottawattamie Country Club. Each student has invited a teacher to the dinner who has tremendously helped him or her in achieving this academic success. The students will recognize their teachers and speak to all of the attendees about their teachers to thank them for their help in their studies. Congratulations to all of the distinguished graduates!
