#1StudentNWI: January Spotlight at La Crosse High School

Student in the Spotlight: Carson Stout
Carson Stout, a LaCrosse High School sophomore, is a chill dude with a passion for fashionable jackets and a finely-honed sense of humor. He has got the sickest kickflips this side of the Mississippi, dankest memes, and more than 1,000 muscles. Carson considers his finest joke to be the classic “magic owl” bit, which is much better told in person than through text. You will have to ask him about it. He looks forward to the days when the school offers their “world famous” mashed potato bowl.

He is also nothing short of a creative personality. Carson was even voted “Most Creative” by his class. His favorite subject is art, and he provides his talents to the bass and guitar in band. His tastes in music span all across the board, from rock to vaporwave and everything in between. Along with proficiencies in art and music, he is a gifted storyteller, sometimes making up entire characters and plots on the spot. Improvisation is a necessity in comedy, and Carson has it mastered.

His junior year he hopes to join the Fire Science program at AK Smith and follow the path to becoming an Emergency Medical Technician. From there he will work to become a paramedic, and “save a lot of lives on the job.”

When he is not at school, he likes to play video games and hang out with his friends. In ten years, he hopes to be frozen in ice. In 200 years, he hopes to still be frozen in ice.

LaCrosse-1Student-January-2017_02Teacher Spotlight
Getting kids excited for history is never an easy feat. Mr. Amor, however, has been doing it and doing it well for the better part of 15 years. His history classes focus on more than just the wrongdoings and triumphs of the United States, however, and even branches out to include the entire world. When he’s not standing in a cloak, smoking a pipe and spinning a globe (metaphorically, of course,) he teaches one of LaCrosse’s Physical Education classes. He is also the head coach of the LaCrosse softball team, who have just recently began conditioning for this year’s season, and the athletic director. They say do what you love, and Mr. Amor loves history.

He likes working at LaCrosse because “you get to know the students.” He hopes that upon graduation from his history courses, “when they are on the street and they get asked, ‘who was president in the Civil War,’ they’ll have an answer.”

Mr. Amor also runs the Academic Super Bowl’s History team. As stated before, the guy knows his stuff, and sticks to his guns. He also keeps up to date on modern day politics, and willingly offers advice and information to first-time voters. Outside of school, you can find him at almost every basketball game, always in a position of leadership, but never afraid to help out.

High schoolers will graduate and move on and new ones will come in their place, but the memories remain. Mr. Amor is a part of history himself.

LaCrosse-1Student-January-2017_03Porter County Conference
The Porter County Conference, is quite possibly what this entire year of basketball has been building up to. Compared to the tournament, all of the past games seem insignificant and small. The Conference game won’t be easy for any of the teams, but rewards the winner lavishly. This year, the prize is the mystical “Kup.” It is a trophy-like cup, and a pretty impressive one at that.

Usually the week before and during PCC, LaCrosse School will have a pep rally and a spirit week. The theme LaCrosse has picked is “Space Jam,” from the classic ‘90s movie in which Michael Jordan and the Looney Toons play basketball against the Monstars, a group of aliens wanting to enslave them. Part of the pep rally included watching the movie, and then watching dances by the poms team and cheerleaders.

The LaCrosse girls have their first tourney game Tuesday, January 17th at 5:30 pm against Kouts. The game will be hosted at the Boone Grove gymnasium. Whoever wins that game will go on to play against the winners of the Westville vs. Hebron game. The final match will be January 21st at 6:00 pm at Kouts.

LaCrosse-1Student-January-2017_04 The boys kick off their tourney on Wednesday, January 18th, against Kouts. They will also have their final deciding game Saturday, January 21st, 8:00 pm at Kouts.

If you happen to come to any of those games leading up to or after the Porter County Conference and would like to support the school and this year’s senior prom, head up to the room to the right of the stage where concessions are sold. The junior class will be selling meat sticks, which come in eight different flavors varying from super duper spicy to milder than a sunny day. The sticks only cost a dollar, and every dollar counts.

Maybe you’re not a prom person, you had a bad experience with it, or you don’t have the taste for meat sticks. Well that’s fine, because along with the regular concessions you can buy, the Dance team is selling nice, cold ice cream for a dollar as well. If you aren’t feeling either of those options, you could always purchase from the concessions stand. All proceeds from their go towards paying for things in the athletic department.

Juniors looking to go to this year’s prom are urged to sign up to help sell the meat sticks. The theme for prom is “Around the World.” While prom is a few months away, it would be appreciated if the juniors could start helping out now. The more money made and the less spent on prom, the more options available for our senior trip.
