Steve’s Deep Cuts: The Boys (and Girls) of Summer Are Back

I never saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac. Any time I ever saw a Grateful Dead on a car, 99.9% of the time it was a Volvo, and 98% of the time the sticker was either the dancing skeletons or the dancing bears. I personally love the bears, but the skeletons were pretty cool, too, I suppose. Especially the skeletons with the top hats that had the roses in them.

Long story short, the boys (and girls) of summer are returning to the Ideas In Motion Media crew in a week or two: Jimmy, Carly, Lydia, and some #1StudenNWIs that have excelled in the young professional journalism program we offer to high school kids.

These kids paid their dues, but now I am over-the-top excited for them to shine this year and make this a summer to remember.

Take a look at some of their best work, and get yourself pumped for the GOOD news train a’ coming this summer.

When Jimmy Slayed Pierogi Fest

The time I realized Jimmy was the man was the time we found ourselves on the second floor of a Beggars Pizza staring at a rickety ladder attached to an old wall. That ladder, the owner of the joint told us, was the key to “the shot” that would make our Pierogi Fest one to remember. Before I could make an excuse that I couldn’t get up the ladder, Jimmy was halfway up the thing.

When Carly Showed Her Soul

The Michigan City Soul Steppers is one of the more unique shows in The Region, but to capture it, you have to use more than a lens. You have to use your heart. Luckily, LIFER Carly has a good eye and a big heart.

When Lydia Made History

Lydia Gerike is the top student journalist in Indiana, and that’s not hyperbole, she has some hardware to prove that. But as much history as Lydia is making on her own, it was also pretty exciting for us to see her capture at Portage’s first outdoor movie night ever.

When Julia Did the Impossible (again)

Julia is in high school at Valparaiso High School, but she’s one of the more brilliant, driven, and responsible people I have ever met at any age. Seriously, I don’t even know where we would be without her. Every time she goes out to cover an event it seems like she comes back somehow one-upping the amazing job she did before.

And here we are, with the time Julia went with her school’s UNICEF program and came back with a story and a photo that seemed to defy gravity… literally.

Summer will be here soon enough, and it’s going to be a good one.

Deep Cuts, out.
