The La Porte Hospital Foundation 12th Annual Tour de La Porte bike, run and walk event celebrated another successful year of expansion to benefit local cancer patients on Saturday, Aug. 24 and Sunday, Aug. 25 at Soldiers Memorial Park in La Porte.
The event included two days of family-friendly activities, welcoming 1,215 participants to run, walk or bike over the weekend! There were 563 riders (riding routes ranging from five to 100 miles throughout scenic La Porte County) who participated in the main cycling event, while 78 riders cycled in either the road or mountain bike time trial events. Other number of participants included: 178 in the 5K run, 213 in the 5K walk, 51 in the 10K run and 124 in the 21K half-marathon. Of these participants, there were 103 cyclist/runner combinations. In addition, 15 children (ages 4 to 8) participated in the Mini TdL fun run of 50- to 200-yards.
All proceeds directly benefit patients with cancer in need of financial assistance of Indiana University Health La Porte and Starke hospitals, and provides community members access to free health screenings. The 2013 TdL raised $75,000 to assist families in the community battling cancer compared to 2012’s total earnings of $70,000. These funds allow The Foundation to help community members focus on treatment and worry less about financial obligations.
The event included individual and team competition. Awards were distributed to overall winners: Haley Schuck, 5K (21:18); Christopher Miko, 5K (18:13); Karen Kantor, 10K (42:08); Scott Swaney, 10K (36:49); Katie Fenstermaker, half-marathon (1:25:41); and Benjamin Reifenberg, half-marathon (1:18:37). Masters winners and age division awards for all three running events were also distributed. All half-marathon runners received a Finisher Award for completing. Awards were given to the top three finishers by age range for the road bike time trial. Awards were also given to overall winners Kathy Eckert (37:34) and Craig Neidlinger (29:12).
