La Porte Hospital Releases Rendering, New Details About Hospital

The La Porte Hospital Board of Trustees on Wednesday approved a rendering of the new La Porte hospital, marking the next major development of the facility that is expected to open in 2020. The rendering, which may undergo some minor changes before the final design is complete, depicts a view that looks onto the main entrance, and shows the emergency department entrance to the side.

“With every major development, our new hospital becomes more of a reality. Seeing what it will look like from the outside is extremely exciting, and reminds us that even with all the work ahead, we are building something incredible for our community. I’m very pleased, and look forward to the work ahead,” said Ashley Dickinson, CEO of La Porte Hospital.

The design team now turns its attention to determining which services will be located on what floors inside the facility. This work will eventually help officials determine the final bed count and room size. The new hospital, like the current facility, will continue to offer private patient rooms and bathrooms.

Dickinson said the new La Porte Hospital will be a full-service acute-care community hospital. That includes – but is not limited to – the inpatient services currently offered, including Emergency Services, Inpatient and Outpatient Surgery, Cardiovascular Services in a Heart Center setting, Critical Care, Orthopedic Services, Birthing & Family Care Services, and others, in addition to all of the ancillary support services for these areas.

Architectural features of the new hospital include a mix of traditional brick and stone, and enormous windows - reflecting both the human scale, and the natural features of La Porte’s lake-rich community of blues, greens, and dune grasses.

The windows will be high performance, low-e glass, which will minimize the amount of ultraviolet and infrared light without compromising the amount of ambient light in the building. It will also contribute to overall energy efficiency, and windows will be placed throughout the facility to maximize daylight in patient care areas.

The building will be supported by a steel frame supplied by regional steel mills.

Sustainability is top of mind for designers as well, with design features giving the hospital the ability to pursue Green Globes certification.

The site prep team and hospital officials continue to work on finalizing the footprint of the facility, which will be built on land the hospital owns next to the current hospital. The community can expect to see some changes to the campus over the next several months as the property is prepared for staging and construction. Hospital officials will release the exact location where the hospital will be built when that has been finalized.
