Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s 2013 in Michigan City

Hundreds of Michigan City residents united in a movement that aims to end Alzheimer’s on Sunday. The walk, which took place at Washington Park in Michigan City, was preceded by an awards ceremony at 1:30 p.m. that thanked sponsors of the event.

The money raised went to the care, support, and research efforts of those impacted by Alzheimers. Walkers could learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical trial enrollment, and support programs and services.

The Newenhause family, although not affected by Alzheimer’s attended the event and said, “We came today simply to support the cause.” They all held orange flowers, representing their support. Registrants all received a Promise Flower, which represented their commitment to remember, honor, and to care and fight Alzheimer’s disease by participating in the walk.

Yellow flowers were passed out to those who know a family member or friend with Alzheimer’s, and blue to those who have Alzheimer’s, and purple to those who have lost a friend or family member to Alzheimer’s.

“There has never been a greater need to join in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease by participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s” said Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter Executive Director Heather Hershberger. “Funds raised will provide care and support services to the thousands of Hoosiers living with Alzheimer’s, while also contributing to advancing critically-needed research that could change the course of Alzheimer’s disease for future generations.”

The even would not have been possible without the many volunteers at the event, such as the “Interact” club from Chesterton High school. The walked kicked off at 2 p.m.
