Symphony Post Acute Network Brings Lunch to Maria Reiner Center

Community partnerships are important for many businesses to partake in. Whether the reasons are to help others, meet new people or provide a needed service, coming together to assist others is a valuable part of life. On Thursday, the Indiana locations of the Symphony Post Acute Network brought in lunch for the Maria Reiner Center in Hobart.

The lunch consisted of salad, a macaroni and cheese bar and pretzel breadsticks, and delighted those in attendance. The lunch also gave members of the center the opportunity to meet representatives of Symphony and learn more about their services.

“We sponsor these lunches because we love the opportunity to give back to the community and work with great organizations, in particular the Maria Reiner Center and Aimee Schallenkamp, the Executive Director,” said Amy Nikruto, Regional Director of Business Development for Symphony.

The Maria Reiner Center is a community center for those aged 55 and older and is much loved by its members. The facility contains classrooms, exercise instruction, a theater room, pool tables, books and many more enrichment activities. The opportunity to bring seniors together, provide entertainment, and introduce them to local services through weekly lunches is an important mission for Executive Director, Aimee Schallenkamp.

“It’s always a great partnership when we get other people and other partners in here,” said Schallenkamp. “It’s a great way to get support from the community. There’s a lot of services that the sponsors offer that the seniors may not know they need. So, it’s a great way for them to get information.”

The love for the center and excitement for the lunches was apparent as Maria Reiner Center volunteers hustled around, helped serve, directed others and distributed desserts. Judy Hannigan, a member and volunteer at the Maria Reiner Center, was excited to see Symphony visiting.

“I love meeting the people and serving the community. The people here are really fantastic and some come every day. We really like the meals and meeting the sponsors,” said Hannigan.

Other members were excited to see Symphony providing lunch due to past experiences with the facilities. Larry Trzupek previously spent time at Symphony of Dyer, focusing on rehabilitation after breaking his leg.

“I stayed at Symphony of Dyer, and I was there for two and a half months,” explained Trzupek. “The therapy was outstanding, and the food was very good. I think they’ve got higher standards than anywhere else; they really watch out for you.”

Lunch provided a way for members of Symphony to reconnect with Trzupek, as well as bring some of their fantastic food to the center. Providing food, a little education and resources for those in attendance proved to be enjoyable for all involved.

“We do it to help our community partners,” said Angela Boland, Director of Clinical Business Development for Symphony of Chesterton. “We want to build those relationships and get people those resources. People can use us as a resource for the communities and at these very active senior centers. They may not have the need today, but it’s good for them to know for the future or if they know someone else who might have a need.”

With representatives present from each of the three Indiana Symphony locations, the Maria Reiner Center actively participating in lunch activities, and many smiling seniors enjoying their lunch, the day proved enjoyable for all.
