Franciscan Alliance Hospitals Rated among Nation’s Best for Cancer Care

commission-on-cancerFranciscan St. Anthony Health-Crown Point and Franciscan St. Anthony Health-Michigan City are among 20 accredited programs nationwide to receive mid-year 2015 Outstanding Achievement awards from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

Award criteria are based on qualitative and quantitative surverys conducted during the first half of the year.

According to the CoC, the purpose of the award is to raise the bar on quality cancer care, with a goal of increasing awareness about care choices for cancer patients and their loved ones.

The award is intended to recognize programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care, to motivate other cancer programs to improve their care, to facilitate dialogue between award recipients and health care professionals at other cancer facilities to share best practices and to encourage honorees to serve as quality-care resources to other cancer programs, the CoC said.

“More and more, we’re finding that patients and their families want to know how the health care institutions in their communities compare with one another,” said Daniel McKellar, MD, CoC chairman. “Through this recognition program, I’d like to think we are playing a small, but vital role, in helping them make informed decisions on their cancer care.”

The 20 award winners represent approximately 9 percent of programs surveyed from Jan. 1 to June 30.

“These programs currently represent the best of the best when it comes to cancer care,” McKellar added.
