Running or Not… Shoes Donation Makes Difference in Cancer Care for Women

When Running or Not…Shoes, 1842 B 45th Street, decided to host a fund raising event in October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, owner Heather Loredo said it was important that the $1,000 raised through shoe sales stayed in NW Indiana to benefit family, friends and neighbors.

“For me, it’s personal,” explained Loredo. “If we can help prevent even just one family from going through what our family has gone through; it will be worth it. We decided we wanted the proceeds to help fund mammograms for those who couldn’t otherwise afford them.”

The group chose the Community Hospital Women’s Diagnostic Center in Munster for their contribution.

“This generous donation will go into the Breast Cancer Awareness Fund that helps local women – those without insurance and who otherwise couldn’t afford it - receive diagnostic breast care,” said Mary Nicholson, MD, medical director of the Community Hospital Women’s Diagnostic Center in Munster. “This funding will enable us to serve many more with the care they need. We strive to ease our patients’ minds, alleviate their stress and fear, and replace it with confidence in care that’s close to home,” she said.

Breast cancer is a disease that can be diagnosed early through routine mammography. The Women’s Diagnostic Center of Community Hospital offers digital mammography with same day results. With advances such as same-day results and coordination between area physicians, women can generally begin treatment for breast cancer within 10 days of diagnosis – saving lives.
