Purdue Calumet’s Sahid Navarro Named CCAC Defensive Player of the Week

PUC-PeregrinsAfter a performance last week that saw the Purdue University Calumet men's soccer team's defense give up just one goal in 180 minute, senior center back Sahid Navarro was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference's Defensive Player of the Week.

Navarro (Chicago, Ill./Gwendolyn Brooks/South Suburban) earns the honor for the first time in his career and gives the Peregrines their second defensive honor this season, as freshman keeper Miguel David (Spring Valley, Calif./Bonita Vista)earned the honor two weeks prior.

The Peregrines (4-3-1, 2-0-1 CCAC) picked up two victories last week, largely on the basis of their strong defensive play. Purdue Calumet defeated Trinity Christian 4-1 Sept. 23 and then shutout Trinity International on the road Saturday, 1-0. Overall, the Peregrines gave up just 16 shots, including only four against TIU. Of the 12 shots given up to Trinity Christian, only five were on goal.

The 6-foot-3 Navarro has started seven of eight match this season for the Peregrines at center back, recording a team-high 620 minutes (out of field players).

Purdue Calumet currently sits in first place in the CCAC standings with today's 3 p.m. home match against Olivet Nazarene next on the slate.
