Purdue Calumet Freshman Gabrielle Martin Selected to All-CCAC Second Team

PUC-PeregrinsPurdue University Calumet freshman Gabrielle Martin was honored for a stellar rookie campaign after she was named to the all-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball second team, as announced by the league office Saturday night.

Martin (Kankakee Valley, Ind./Kankakee Valley) was one of five freshman named to one of the two all-league squads, after the 5-foot-9 outside hitter led the Peregrines in kills (302), kills per set (2.67), service aces (34), and was second in digs with 113 (2.62 per set).

Martin also held a .949 reception percentage after starting every match for Purdue Calumet as one of its biggest offensive threats. In 2014, Martin set single-match career highs in hitting percentage (.360 in a win over Indiana Northwest), kills (17 in a four-set win over Moody Bible), and reached double figures in kills 15 times and digs 17 times, including a match-high of 19 in a win at Calumet College.

The freshman also set single-season program records (since the sport was reinstated in 2010) in kills, attack attempts (1,044), service aces, points (349.5), and sets played (113).

Trinity Christian senior setter Erynn Schuh was named both the Player of the Year and the Setter of the Year, Cardinal Stritch’s Melissa Murphy was tabbed the Libero of the Year and TCC’s middle hitter Danielle Oeverman was honored as the Freshman of the Year as selected by the league’s coaches.

Cardinal Stritch Head Coach Natalie Wildes was named the Coach of the Year after the Wolves captured both the regular-season and tournament titles with Saturday’s three-set sweep over Olivet Nazarene in the title match.
