Purdue University Northwest Sports Update, April 17, 2017

Purdue-Northwest-Edged-at-USF-5-4Purdue Northwest Edged at USF, 5-4 The Purdue University Northwest men's tennis late rally came up short as the Pride fell to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday.

The Fighting Saints (5-10, 4-1 CCAC) defeated the Pride (9-6, 2-4 CCAC), 5-4, at Challenge Fitness in Lockport, Ill. Saturday afternoon.

USF started the match winning three straight matches at doubles competition but PNW fought back at singles competition and almost pulled off the comeback.

Ulf Grosseloh (Maximiliansau, Germany) won in dominating fashion at No. 1 singles against USF's Miguel Rayos del Sol, winning every game in each set, 6-0, 6-0. Moritz Gisy (Duesseldorf, Germany) won at No. 2 singles in his return from injury over USF's Michael Hasler in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3.

Diego Pimentel (Guayaquil, Ecuador) also picked up the victory in a close match at No. 4 singles over USF's Lucas Randall, 7-5, 7-5. Jonluke Passett (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandberg) was able to pick up the victory at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0, against USF's David Kohler.

Grosseloh and Gisy came up close at No. 1 doubles but fell to USF's Michael Hasler and Miguel Rayos del Sol, 8-6. Mauricio Villacres (Guayaquil, Ecuador) and John Mamelson (St. John, Ind./Lake Central) fell short at No. 3 doubles to USF's Kohler and Fritz Ticala, 8-6.

Villacres fell at No. 3 singles to USF's Sandberg, 6-4, 6-2. Mamelson had a close match at No. 6 singles but lost to USF's Ticala, 7-5, 6-2.

PNW returns to action Friday, April 21 as the Pride host CCAC opponent Roosevelt University at Dowling Park's Community Hospital Tennis Complex with matchtime schedule to start at noon CT.

PNW Baseball Splits with IU South Bend The Purdue University Northwest baseball team used a high powered comeback effort to defeat IU South Bend, 11-10, in Game 1, before dropping the nightcap 16-15 to the Titans.

The Pride (18-14, 11-6 CCAC) connected on four home runs on the day, including 13 extra base hits to combine for 26 total runs on the day.

Freshmen Tyler Kenjic (Hobart, Ind./Hobart), Jono Bigger (Roselawn, Ind./North Newton) and junior Jonny Albers (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) all connected on their first career home runs, with Alec Skalka (Munster, Ind./Munster) earning his second career homer, his first being of inside the park fashion during the fall season.

Bigger, Kenjic, Austin Kordik (West Chicagon, Ill./West Chicago) and Larry Crisler (Gary, Ind./Bishop Noll) all led the Pride with four hits on the day, with Kenjic recording seven RBI total.

Game 1: PNW 11, IUSB 10 The Pride jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Titans would answer back in the top of the third with an 8-run inning to take an 8-2 advantage.

The Titans would add two more runs in the top of the fourth frame, but the Pride would answer back with three runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to a 3-run homer from Albers which cut its deficit to 10-5.

The Pride would break the bats out in the bottom of the sixth, starting with a 2-run homer from Kenjic making it 10-7.

Luke Schmidt (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) would keep the inning alive with a 2-run double which plated Anthony Quintero (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) and Andrew Atchison (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) to put the Pride within one, 10-9.

Jono Bigger would put the exclamation mark on the inning with what would be the game-winning home run in the bottom of the sixth that plated Smith and put the Pride ahead 11-10.

Senior Matt Sandoval (Highland, Ind./Bishop Noll) would earn his second save of the season, shutting down the Titans in the seventh and giving the Pride the win.

Zac Hernandez (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) got the start for the Pride, allowing eight runs in 2.2 innings pitched while Fabian Del Real (Calumet City, Ill./T.F. North) picked up the win after throwing 3.1 innings on the mound, allowing two runs while striking out three.

Game 2: IUSB 16, PNW 15 After IUSB took a 5-2 advantage heading in to the third inning, the Pride battled back to take its first lead of the game, 6-5, thanks to back-to-back RBI-hits from Kordik and Kenjic.

The Titans would answer back to take a 9-6 advantage in the top of the fourth frame, but the Pride would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-8.

An RBI-groundout from Luke Schmidt followed by an RBI-double from Crisler helped the Pride retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, 10-9.

IUSB would answer yet again with a five-run top of the sixth frame to go ahead 14-10, but an RBI-groundout from Kenjic followed by a solo homer from Skalka in the bottom of the seventh put the Pride within two, 14-12.

After the Titans added two more runs, the Pride looked to make another comeback in the bottom of the ninth, but just came up short as the Titans pulled away with the 16-15 win.

Alex Batistatos (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) got the start on the mound for the Pride, allowing nine runs, three earned, in five innings of work with five strikeouts.

Willie Bennet (Santee Calif./West Hills) then entered the game in relief, throwing 0.2 innings of work allowing five runs while Deven Smith (Royal Center, Ind./Pioneer) pitched 1.2 innings allowing one run on one hit.

Brody Kutch (La Porte, Ind./La Porte) finished the game for the Pride, allowing just one run in 1.2 innings of work while striking out two.

The Pride return to action Tuesday, Apr. 18, when they host Saint Xavier University in a CCAC doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. (CT).

Purdue Northwest Falls at USF, 7-2 The Purdue University Northwest women’s tennis team dropped a 7-2 league contest at St. Francis (Ill.) Saturday afternoon.

PNW graduate student Selina Baez (Hammond, Ind./Bishop Noll) picked up the Prides’ (6-7, 3-3 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) lone win at singles, topping USF’s Katie Monahan at No. 6 singles in a three-set battle. Baez dropped the first set, 6-2, before rallying to win Set 2, 6-1. She would go on to take the tiebreaker, 14-12.

The No. 3 doubles’ squad of Tatiana Spak (Hobart, Ind./Hobart) and Chole Conaway (Highland, Ind./Highland) also defeated USF’s Monahan and doubles’ partner Erika Edrada in convincing fashion, 8-1.

At No. 5 singles, PNW’s Spak lost in straight sets, but managed to put seven points up against Edrada in her setback.

USF improved to 10-7 overall and a perfect 6-0 in the conference with the win.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Friday, April 21, when the Pride host Roosevelt for a noon CT matchup.

Purdue Northwest Ninth at Final Round at Blackthorn The Purdue University Northwest women’s golf team cut eight strokes off its Day 1 score to place ninth in Saturday’s final round of the Battle at Blackthorn, hosted by Bethel College.

Freshman Lauren Bailey (Wanatah, Ind./Lacrosse) just missed a Top 10 finish, placing tied for 13th with a two-day round of 168. PNW teammate Darian Smith (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) was the next Pride finisher, placing 33rd after shaving a stroke off her Day 1 score with a Saturday 89 to record a 36-hole round of 179.

Freshman Meaghan Spalla (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) placed 41st overall after cutting five strokes off her Day 1 score for a 91, which also marked a new career-low and gave her a two-day mark of 187.

Rachel Pennington (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) rounded out the Pride team score with a 99 – six strokes better than Friday – to finish with a 204 and Jenna Gericke (Highland, Ind./Highland) finished with a 234.

Bethel won the team event with a two-day score of 656, St. Xavier was second with a 671 and Indiana Wesleyan third at 676. St. Xavier’s Taylor Thompson captured medalist honors with a two-day mark of 156.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Tuesday when the Pride travel to Oak Brook, Ill., for the Elmhurst Bluejay Spring Invite.

Purdue Northwest Runner-Ups at Final Day at Blackthorn The Purdue University Northwest men’s golf team pulled off its second-straight second-place finish at the final day of the Battle at Blackthorn, hosted by Bethel College Saturday.

The Pride recorded a two-day score of 626 to take second, as Indiana Wesleyan shot a field-best 301 Saturday to take the title with a final mark of 608.

PNW freshman Brian Brzycki (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) led the way for the second-straight tournament, shooting a two-day round of 153 to tie for eighth overall in the 61-golfer event.

Senior Patrick Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) was second for the Pride with a 155 to place tied for 13th; sophomore Ryan Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) snagged a Top 20 finish with his 158 and senior Brandon Martin (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) rounded out the Pride’s team score with a two-day mark of 160.

Freshman Payton Smith (Cedar Lake, Ind./Hanover Central) recorded a two-day score of 171 to round out PNW’s competitors.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Monday when the Pride travel to West Lafayette, Ind., for the one-day Taylor University Ackerman-Allen Classic.

PNW Softball Defeats Calumet St. Joseph in Doubleheader Friday The Purdue University Northwest softball team picked up a sweep over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Calumet St. Joseph Friday afternoon.

The Pride (19-16-1, 9-5 CCAC) have won 8 of its last 9 conference games and have moved in to fifth place in the CCAC standings.

Game 1: PNW 7, CCSJ 5 After the Crimson Wave took an early 1-0 advantage to start off the contest, the Pride rallied back to score four runs in the top of the third inning to take a 4-1 advantage.

Holly Pagan (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) would record an RBI-groundout to plate Haley Loden (Crown Point, Ind./Lake Central) which evened the score at one run apiece.

Tessa Steffens (Litchfield, Ill./Litchfield) and Allyson Leach (Demotte, Ind./North Newton) kept the inning alive to drive in three runs combined which extended the Pride’s lead.

CCSJ would score two runs in the bottom half of the third, but the Pride would answer back with three runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-3 lead.

The Crimson Wave would score one run in the fifth and sixth innings but the Pride would hold off any comeback efforts to pick up the 7-5 win.

It was a combined effort from the Pride pitching staff, with Pagan starting the game and throwing 2.2 innings while striking out two.

Leslie Ford (Garden City, Kan./Garden City) would come in relief of Pagan to throw 1.1 shutout innings with Audrey Headley (Lafayette, Ind./MCutcheon) also throwing 1.1 innings in relief.

Caroline Brown (Minooka, Ill./Minooka Community) would shut down the Crimson Wave for 1.2 innings to end the game and give the Pride the 7-5 win.

Game 2: PNW 9, CCSJ 1

After a scoreless first frame, the Pride put up six runs in the top of the second, starting with back-to-back RBI-singles from Leach and Loden.

Kyleigh Payne (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bishop McNamara) would then come up to the plate with the bases loaded and crush the ball over the center field fence for a grand slam to put the Pride ahead 6-0.

The Crimson Wave would score one run in the bottom of the inning but the Pride would add one more in the top of the fourth on a wild pitch.

Samantha Oppenhuis (Munster, Ind./Illiana Christian) would add on to the scoring efforts for the Pride with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh to put the Pride ahead 9-1.

Brown would shut down the Crimson Wave for the rest of the game to give the Pride the victory.

Brown pitched a complete game for the Black and Gold, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out three.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Tuesday, Apr. 18, when they host St. Ambrose University at Dowling Park in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. (CT).

PNW Baseball Earns 12-5 Victory over IU South Bend Friday The Purdue University Northwest baseball team earned a 12-5 victory over Indiana University South Bend Friday afternoon.

The Pride (17-13, 10-5 CCAC) recorded seven hits on the day, but earned 11 walks, and multiple hit by pitches, which helped lead to a seven-run ninth inning that gave the Black and Gold the victory.

Mike Mikulich (Hebron, Ind./Hebron) led the Pride with two hits and three RBI, while Larry Crisler (Gary, Ind./Bishop Noll) and Austin Kordik (West Chicago, Ill./West Chicago) each tallied 2-RBI a piece.

Avondre Harris (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawka) recorded three walks for the Pride while Kordik, Tyler Crussen (Wheeler, Ind./Wheeler) and Hunter Thorn (Portage, Ind./Portage) each earned two walks to lead the Pride’s baserunner efforts.

PNW trailed 2-0 until the top of the fifth inning when the Pride put up 3 runs thanks to a Titans miscue in the field to put the Black and Gold ahead 3-2.

IUSB would even the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning, before taking a 5-4 advantage later on in the seventh frame.

PNW would battle back to even the score at 5-5 in the top of the eighth inning after Thorn scored on a sacrifice fly from Kordik.

The top of the ninth inning was the deciding factor in the game, with PNW scoring seven runs on just two hits but five walks with two players hit by pitch to help give the Pride a 12-5 victory.

Josh Arnold (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) started on the mound for the Pride, throwing five innings while allowing three runs with Deven Smith (Royal Center, Ind./Pioneer) throwing 1.1 innings of relief allowing one earned run.

Brett Shoults (Oxford, Ind./Benton Central) recorded his second win of the season, throwing 2.2 innings and allowing one run, zero earned with one strike out.

PNW returns to action Saturday afternoon when the Pride take on the Titans in a doubleheader at Dowling Park starting at I p.m. (CT).

Bailey Fourth After Day 1 at Blackthorn for Purdue Northwest Women Lauren Bailey shot her second-best round of the year to lead the Purdue University Northwest women's golf team on Day 1 of the Battle at Blackthorn Friday in South Bend, Ind.

Bailey (Wanatah, Ind./Lacrosse) shot an 82, just three strokes off her best score of 79, to place tied for fourth place in Round 1 of the two-day event.

PNW teammate Darian Smith (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores) was next with a 90 (t-34th) - two strokes off her season-low -- and Meaghan Spalla (Crown Point, Ind./Boone Grove) shot a 96.

Rounding out PNW's team score was Rachel Pennington (Circleville, Ohio/Logan Elm) with a 105. Jenna Gericke (Highland, Ind./Highland) recorded a 113 to round out PNW's competitors.

The Pride stood in ninth place and will continue action Saturday morning.

Brzycki Leads Purdue Northwest Men on Day 1 at Blackthorn Purdue University Northwest freshman Brian Brzycki shot his second-best round of the season to lead the way for the Pride men's golf team on Day 1 of the Battle at Blackthorn Friday in South Bend, Ind.

Brzycki (Griffith, Ind./Griffith) shot a Day 1 73 and the Pride men stood tied for second place in the team standings with a 307, just three strokes off leader Olivet Nazarene (304).

Brzycki's score put him tied for fifth place, as four golfers tied for first with 72s. Senior Patrick Mudd (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) was next for PNW, shooting a Day 1 75, and Ryan Wells (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) recorded a 78 to round out the Pride players under 80. Rounding out the team score for PNW was Brandon Martin (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton) with an 81 and teammate Payton Smith (Cedar Lake/Hanover Central) shot an 85.

Purdue Northwest returns to action Saturday morning to complete the two-day event.

For Bryzcki, his score was just two strokes off his career-best 71, which he recorded last week at the St. Francis (Ill.) Spring Invite.
