La Porte High School Athletic Director to be Honored by IBCA

Two officials, five administrators to receive awards at IBCA Clinic
Game officials Ferguson, Frye to be cited; Gilliland, Siefert, Moorhead also to be honored on April 22

lphs-cheerleaders-defaultGame officials Jason Ferguson and Bob Frye as well as school administrators Ed Gilliland of LaPorte, Mel Siefert of Plainfield and Rob Moorhead of South Ripley will be will be recognized with special awards at the 2016 Indiana Basketball Coaches Association annual Clinic later this month.

Ferguson and Frye will be honored as respective winners of the Roy Gardner and Mildred Ball awards, while Gilliland, Siefert and Moorhead will receive recognition as Administrators of the Year from the IBCA. All will be presented plaques during a ceremony on April 22 during the IBCA annual spring clinic at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis.

The officials are being cited for their work impacting the game floor, Ferguson from 1994-present and Frye from 1977-2000.

Ferguson has officiated multiple sports over the past 22 years and has overcome a bout with bone cancer to stay in the game. Over the years, the Whiteland resident has worked 14 girls’ basketball sectionals, nine girls’ basketball regionals and two girls’ basketball semi-states. On the boys’ side, he has worked 17 sectionals, 13 regionals, four semi-states and one state championship (the 2013 Class A game).

Frye called boys' basketball and girls' basketball games from 1977-95. Over his career, the Indianapolis resident called 10 girls' sectionals, seven girls' regionals, three girls' semistates and one girls' state championship game. He also worked 13 boys' sectionals, nine boys' regionals, four boys' semistates and one boys' state title game. After he stopped working on the floor, Frye continued to serve the game as an IHSAA officiating observer from 1996-2000.

The three administrators are being honored for their support of programs in their schools -- Gilliland as athletic director at LaPorte, Siefert as principal at Plainfield and Moorhead as superintendent of South Ripley Schools. Gilliland is the honoree from District 1. Siefert is cited from District 2. Moorhead is the recipient for District 3.

Gilliland, in his 19th year as athletic director at LaPorte, is a member of the IHSAA's Board of Directors. He also has served as president of the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association in 2009-10 and has been the group's secretary since 2012. Gilliland was honored as the IIAAA State Administrator of the Year in 2010-11 and earlier this year learned he will receive a Citation Award from the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Siefert is completing his third year as principal at Plainfield. He previously was a teacher and boys basketball coach at Batesville, compiling a 162-97 record as head coach for the Bulldogs. His basketball tenure included a Class 3A state runner-up finish in 2004. He later served as a counselor, athletic director and assistant principal at Batesville Middle School before becoming principal of Batesville Middle School. He moved to Plainfield as principal in the fall of 2013.

Moorhead is in his fourth year as superintendent of South Ripley Schools. Following in the footsteps of his parents as an educator, Moorhead worked for 25 years in South Dearborn Schools -- 11 years as a teacher and coach, five years as an associate principal and nine years as high school principal. He was a boys' basketball assistant coach at South Dearborn for six years and the Knights' head coach for five years.

2016 IBCA Administrators of the Year
District 1: Ed Gilliland, athletic director, LaPorte

Ed Gilliland is completing his 19th year as athletic director at LaPorte High School.

Prior to being named the LaPorte athletic director, Gilliland was a business teacher and coach at Oregon-Davis, New Castle, LaPorte and Lafayette Jeff. He coached various levels of baseball at all four schools, including varsity coach at Oregon-Davis and Lafayette Jeff. He also was a freshman basketball coach at New Castle and a freshman football coach at LaPorte.

A 1977 graduate of LaPorte, Gilliland earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Ball State in 1981, then added a master’s degree in secondary education from Ball State in 1987.

Gilliland is a current member of the IHSAA Board of Directors, and he is a 19-year member of the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. He served as president of the IIAAA in 2009-10 and has been the group’s secretary since 2012.

In addition, Gilliland has served the Duneland Athletic Conference as baseball chairman for 19 years, softball chairman for 13 years and overall league chairman in 2001-02 and 2008-09.

Gilliland was honored as the IIAAA State Administrator of the Year in 2010-11 and earlier this year learned he will receive a Citation Award from the National Federation of State High School Associations.

He also has been presented the NIAAA State Award of Merit in 2013 and the IIAAA’s Charles F. Maas Service Award for District 1 in 2013 and 2015. Gilliland also has been selected to the LaPorte High School Baseball Hall of Fame and the LaPorte Old-Timers Hall of Fame.

Gilliland and his wife, Marie, have three adult children – Elizabeth, Malorie and James – and six grandchildren. A seventh grandchild is expected in May.
