The LaPorte Lacrosse Club is Looking for a Few Good Men and Women

lp-lacrose-clubLa Porte is a very active community with tons of sports and activities for kids of all ages. One that not many may know about is lacrosse. The LaPorte Lacrosse Club satisfies the desire of those who need a challenging sport in their lives. It’s a not for profit organization that has lacrosse teams at the middle and high school level and guys and girls are welcome to play.

“We started the club 14 years ago as a response to young men who wanted to play in the area,” Stacey Harris, Club President said. “Parents and community members came together and created the club for the kids. A majority of the club’s funds come from registration fees and the rest from fundraising efforts done throughout the year.”

Kids in can join the club beginning in the 4th grade. There are two groups in the middle school program: 5th and 6th grade, and then 7th and 8th grade. 4th graders can play with the 5th and 6th grade team. The high school team consists of 9th-12th grade.

On February 2, 2016 the middle school teams will kick off their indoor conditioning. Practices will take place in the Hailmann Elementary School gym every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. All LaPorte Lacrosse Club middle school games are sanctioned by the Northern Indiana Lacrosse Association (NILA).

On February 20, 2016 there is a free skills clinic at the Fieldhouse at LaPorte High School running 10 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Students will practice with the high school team and cover the basics of stick handling, catching, and passing. Gear will not be provided so any kids who wish to participate must come prepared with a lacrosse helmet, stick, and gloves.

About 8-10 games are played each year across northern Indiana. From March to May, the Club plays schools like Penn, North Ridge, South Bend, St. Pius, Bremen, and more.

“My son loves it,” Harris said. “It’s a blast. He has played since he was in 6th grade. Lacrosse is a hybrid between soccer and hockey. It’s great for football players who need to stay in shape during the off season and while we’re really competitive, our club is fun and family-oriented.”

There are four coaches for the middle school teams, and two of the coaches on the high school team were once players so they worked their way up through the ranks. There are also scholarships for lacrosse so students can play the sport in college.
