Hammond Breaks Ground on Ice Kube Hockey Complex

Chilly weather made for a fitting atmosphere to celebrate the future ice hockey complex in Hammond, Indiana. On November 7, Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr., the Hammond Redevelopment Commission, community members, and officials of Ice Kube LLC hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Ice Kube Sports Complex.

Residing on the site of the former Hammond FOP building, the Ice Kube will hold court to hockey players across the Region. From young beginners and benders to the most experienced clappers, players of all ages and skill levels can take to the ice.

“We come here together to kick-off a project that will be a beacon for the City of Hammond. Its demand is immediate, its impact is substantial, and its potential is limitless,” Richard Sobilo, Director of the Ice Kube Sports Complex said at the groundbreaking. “We are proud to say we come as a local group, as Region born and bred and still residing in the Region.”

The $7.5M, 94,000 square foot facility looks to be an ideal use of the vacant parcel it will fill. With its proximity to Dowling Park, the Jean Shepherd Center, and Purdue University Northwest, the Kube’s location rests in the hub of Hammond’s active heart and represents a great investment for the youth of Hammond.

Another element to look forward to is how this facility will continue to shape the future of Hammond, as both a home and a travel destination. The Ice Kube Sports Complex, along with the brand new Hammond Sportsplex, is guaranteed to help make Hammond a destination city for sporting events, tournaments, and contests for families and their athletes from all across the Midwest.

“The City welcomes innovative developments like this ice hockey complex. This kind of development will bring in tons of families each weekend to Hammond, who will then stay and eat at our restaurants and shop at our stores and stay at our hotels,” said Mayor Thomas M. McDermott, Jr. “This ice hockey facility will not only support the youth in the Region, teaching them about sportsmanship and leadership, but will also boost our local economy, benefitting Hammond residents and Hammond workers. This is a great addition for Hammond.”

Now that the ground (or, shall we say, ice) is broken, it’s time to dust off those skates, line up the pucks, and start prepping. The Ice Kube Sports Complex is expected to open in 2019 for the next hockey season.
