Washington Park Zoo hosts Brew at the Zoo

Wine and beer enthusiasts enjoyed sunny weather, delicious wines and brews, and zoo animal exhibits at the 2019 Brew at the Zoo fundraiser at Washington Park Zoo in Michigan City, Ind. Attendees also enjoyed live music from the band HiFi2WiFi.

More than 20 different breweries, wineries, and restaurants were at Brew at the Zoo, including Burn Em Brewery, Patrick’s Grille, Misbeehavin Meads, Devil’s Trumpet Brewing Company, Lagunitas Brewing Company, White Claw, Zorn Brew Works, and Pokro Brewing Company. People enjoyed trying different drinks, meeting vendors, and strolling through the zoo.

The attendance cost was $50 for the entrance fee, drinks, and food. This year, the event sold out of tickets ahead of time. The proceeds for this fundraiser go to the care of the animals at the zoo.

Richard Warner, Vice President of the Washington Park Zoological Society, said this brewery event is special because people can enjoy different drinks while socializing and strolling throughout the zoo exhibits.

“I’m really big into the zoo…I not only work here but I am a member of the zoo board,” Warner said. “I just like the conservation efforts and the educational efforts, and the Zoological Society is actually able to support those efforts with this event in particular, Brew at the Zoo, which turns out this is our biggest event of the year.”

The Washington Park Zoological Society is a supporting, non-profit agency of the Washington Park Zoo.

“Everything we take in for all of our events goes directly back to the zoo in feeding and care of the animals,” Warner said.

Debbie Henckle, an attendee at Brew at the Zoo has worked at the event over the past few years, but this year she was enjoying attending the event.

“What I like about it is that the money is going to the [Zoological] Society,” Henckle said.

“The animals are more active at night, so it’s interesting to see them,” said Lynda Ericson, an attendee of Brew at the Zoo.

Mary Lukes, event stylist and bartender for Zorn Brew Works, said her favorite part of this event was the animals.

“I’ve lived here for five years and this is my first time at the zoo so I’m really excited. I love the whole feel of everything and it’s just wonderful,” Lukes said.

Shawne Sheldon, Retail Manager at Washington Park Zoo, has worked at this event each year since the Brew at the Zoo began nine years ago.

“I kind of like seeing all the different breweries and everything coming in here. There’s a lot of new things here that I’ve never heard of,” Sheldon said.

Sheldon also likes how this event brings community members to the Washington Park Zoo.

“It’s just fun seeing everyone in here at the zoo enjoying it and having a good time. A lot of the time people won’t come out here because they don’t have small kids and this is a nice chance for the adults to come out and enjoy the zoo.”
